fuel tank question for a 1991 aquasport 175
« on: December 28, 2008, 08:54:39 AM »
Hello Everyone, i just boat my Aquasport boat it is a 1991 175 aquasport osprey. i have a few questions I hope you all can help me out. I have to replace the gas tank.
1st what are the strips you want to put under the gas tank to keep it off the coffin floor?
2nd where do I get the strips from?
3rd the stainless steel strips that hold down the tank do not have good fashers where could I get new ones.
4th what is the foam everyone is talking about my tank did not have any.
I wonder if the tank had been pulled before and they never put foam back in or if the newer boats did not come with foam.
I like the fact it did not have foam cause it made things easy but if it is nessasary to help keep the tank in place I want to foam it in. I am also wondering if there is a good product that helps coate the tank to help it last longer. I have to figure out how to post pictures new to group and look forward to hearing from everyone. also if I can help with any questions about pulling a tank let me know thanks Rich

Here is the material to place under the tank and where to get it.

I don't know what your fasteners look like.  Mine were just stainless bolts and nuts.  You can get those at a big box store or hardware store.

The foam is an open cell polyurethane.  Be glad you don't have any.  It is not necessary around the tank and usually causes most tank failures.  Just say no to foam around the tank.

I check all the hardware stores, no straps I check the marine stores none either. They have the belt buckel straps but I was looking for the bolt fastening kind. And thanks for the reply guys looking forward to redoing the boat not sure if I am going to get into the transom yet. having mixed feelings.

Hey about my tank anyone want to comment on what to do.
1st. I heard of plastic strips that are 5200 to the tank and then 5200 a small amount to the strips when putting the tank in and not even using straps or anything to hold the tank down.
or use neoprene but this is a type of rubber which I am told not to use with an aluminun tank because it can cause corrosion. Use this with the old type of straps to hold the tank in place.
Here is the thing I think the old tank corroded because the straps where not tied down correctly and they where sitting in the bilge creating a corrosion problem. I am not sure but this is what I don't want to repeat again. My problem with 5200 is that I don't want to replace the tank in the future and ripe the coffin out with it. lol
I also want to put to batteries in the boat I have one now and want to add another. How do you do this. I know I need a switch for 2 batteries then I know the positive terminals would go to the switch but where do the negative terminals go?
Any help is appreciated and hope everyone had a happy holiday.
