Shaft lenth for porta bracket
« on: August 20, 2008, 04:17:16 PM »
I am thinking repowering and I still have a cut out transom.  I want to close in the transom in the future and probably will use a porta bracket. I know most of the jobs I have seen with a portas have 25 inchers.   If I buy a 20" shaft motor now, will it work when I close in the transom?  If someone has a little advise, I would surely appreciate it.

It should work with the porta. However what the dealer told me was that with the shorter shaft the engine block will be lower to the water so when you come down off plane quickly you will have that surge of water that is always coming up onto your motor cover and possibly getting in. They said you would have a lot more corrosion and maintenance issues with a short shaft on a larger boat. Guy may have been full of crap but thats the story I got, I went with the 25" shaft.

Go with a 25 and keep the motor out of the water.  20 inch motors get too much salt in the cowling and corrode much faster.

MHO, and worth maybe even $0.02...
