I have two a sports now, one I believe is a 1977 170 rebuild in progres, and my second is my ready to go after a fuel system clean up, its a 1987 striper. Ive cleaned the carb's replaced all the filters and have new fuel lines to put in, but the previus owner left about 15 gallons of gas in the tank for two years. I removed the old gas pulled the sending unit and there is brown gunk on the bottom im going to pour laker thinner in the tank to clean it and help break it up. After i take all that out do you think it will be ok?There isnt much gunk and its not really thick but I can only see a little area. Any advice would help thanks.

Hi stripper and welcome
Are you able to take the tank out? I would think that in order to clean it good, I mean real good, is to take it out, would be easier also to drain the remaining lacker thinner that's inside, are you planing to add or do you have a fuel filter water separator

That's what I would do anyway, take it out if possible

Yes I have a brand new water seperator on it, I can take the tank out but was hoping to avoid this because the electrical is acutally wired up realy nice and everything works so I was trying to avoid this headach if all possible. If this is the best way to go I will. Thanks

Don't forget, it doesn't take much junk in the fuel tank to screw up an engine
