Hello all, I am a new owner of a 1987 222, and new to this forum. I enjoy it very much and have a lot of fun with is so far wih my son on the Jersey shore. I am looking to repower it at the end of the season, It still has the original enirude 200 and is putting out 95 pounds in each cylinder, I was advised that it is worn, but would get me through the season. I was also told that my transom is soft which I can see for myself. My idea which I need some advise on is, which I would like to do at the end of the season.
1) Have the Transom redone and closed off
2) Have a dual bracket installed
3) Repower with (2) 140 Johnsons (which I have the oputunity to purchace now)
My questions are is this doable? I am not sue what the power rating for this vessle is. Thank you for and input or advise,

Good boats, My old 200 ccp max hp was 200. But twin 140's would probably be too much hp and weight for that boat. I think (and I know a few guys with 222's will correct me) that the hp is 250 or under for that boat. There are a few posts with encloed transoms and you can see what they turned out like.

Glenn, rebuilding the transom and adding a bracket is doable in the off season as long as nothing else has to be done, like replace the sole.
The weight of your 200 is about max for that boat. If you add the bracket you'll get even more leverage working against you, so putting two 140s on will probably submerge your bailers. You would also have to add trim tabs to level the ride.
My rebuild will have an enclosed transom and bracket but only one six cyclindar engine. Plus I have made adjustments to move weight forward to counter balance the extra leverage and I have trim tabs just because I like the option to adjust the ride when ever I want.

222CCPs were designed to handle twin 120s or 130s, and you see quite a few with that engine configuration. I think a nice 250 single (4 stroke if you got the $$$) would be ideal, but some like the peace of mind that comes from twins...
So twin 140 Johnson V-4s would be a nice setup with a new, solid transom and a floatation bracket. Be careful with mounting height, as most 222CCPs use 20" twins, so you check the shaft length. If the motors are 25" - you will need to mount them higher. I would stick to the floatation bracket to offset moving the weight aft. This is basically what Aquasport did in some later models - closed the transom on the 222, put a floatation bracket on, and presto - it's a 230!
See ya on the water!

I believe the CG plate on my 84 CCP shows a maximum HP of 245.

Capt. Bob you are correct. The 245 HP max is based on the CG ratings at the time that included OA length, beam, and transom height. But you've got to remember that times change, and an enclosed transom and newer motors change ratings. The final version in 2005 of the 222CCP had twin 150s as a motor option. As far as I know, all 150s are V-6. That would mean an enclosed transom 222CCP could handle 300 or so, and I know some that are running that. So a 222CCP with an enclosed transom, a floatation bracket, and a couple of V-4 outboards should easily make the grade.
My 22-2CCP is rated for 245HP, and original power options included twin 115 OMC or Mercury motors. The OMC would be V-4; the Mercury would have been tower of power I-6. Either option would have weighed in at about the same as the OMC V-4 130/140 (not much difference there).
I am totally against highly overpowering a boat - I would not put twin 225s on my CCP - but when you change the equation - by enclosing the transom, beefing up motor mounts, and adding floatation aft - boats can handle more power. The key is keeping the balance fore and aft and proper positioning of the motor(s) in the water to achieve good handling properties. Too much weight aft and you will porpoise and struggle with bow rise; too much weight forward - well, we don't see much of that these days - but that means bow-dunking into swells and water over the bow at rest.
So I guess the answer is - as it always is - "it depends." What can the as-left configuration of the boat handle? How does she sit in the water? What will the insurance company agree to? Once you are off the map, you've got to find your own way, but experience and guidance can help.

Thank you for all the information. I believe I am going to keep it single and around 225 Hp.
