Painting An Outboard??
« on: June 06, 2008, 03:25:08 PM »
My outboard was covered in flaking black paint.  i power washed 90% of it off to reveal a blue lower unit and green upper lol!  my cowl is in overall good shape and am going with rustoleum grey primer then gloss white rattle can for that.  do i need to use any speacial paint on the rest of the motor?  will rustoleum do the trick or should i use something else.  btw, this is a trailered boat.  no anti-fouling paint required.

Paint the motor

As with any paint job, it's 80% preparation and 20% execution.  Sand and clean the surfaces with 240 or 320 and paint it with a good quality outdoor rated paint.  You probably don't want to paint below the cavitation plate - it will likely flake off anyway - but you can do a pretty good job with a rattle can if you do good prep and are careful.

Good luck!!

If I may add to GF's advice, you should use a two part paint like imron or awlgrip if you want to do it right.  You can put either below the cavitation plate and it will last just like the factory finish.  Make sure to also use an epoxy primer like awlgrip's 545!

Whatever happened to zinc chromate? We used that as a primer on the alum. engine parts. Had that funky baby sh%t green/yellow tint.
Can stated that it caused cancer in anything that breathed. Always wondered about that one :o

Painting Outboard

the black paint that came off all had shiny silver under it, on the paint chips, not the motor.  it looks heavy-duty, but didn't hold up for nuthin.  the lower is evinrude blue and the top end is evinrude(?) green, kinda peasoup green.  soon they'll both be gloss white!  i'm putting the evinrude flag decals on the cowl.

The pea green sounds like primer.

When I painter my engine bracket I wanted to use zinc chromate first.  I had a hard time finding it.

So get this.......breathing the fumes causes cancer

So can you buy a pint of it??   NOOOOOOOOO

Only availble in SPRAY CANS!!!!!!

Does that make any sense at all??

Three years ago I went to an automotive store and picked up Zinc Chromate in a can to prime the truck bed of my 1974 Ford F-150.  By signing up for the local community college adult evening class, I got to use their paint booth.  Truck was stolen before I could finish the rebuild.  It still hurts to think someone probably sold it to scrap.  Lots of changes have been made in what can and cannot be sold in paints, but try a good automotive shop to see if you can still get it if you're looking for it.

I still have a couple cans of that from when I had my Evinrude.  I didn't know that was polyester leisure suits time
