Fuel Well Seal
« on: May 03, 2008, 04:24:40 PM »
I've got a "whaddayoudo" question... 1985 20'CCP, no gas smells below deck, opened fuel well hatches for visual inspection and saw a bunch of grunge and crystalized salt.  Not worried yet, but curious, so I propped up the console and removed the fuel tub cover.  There was some standing water in the well (less than 1") and all kind of stuff growing in there, black moldy looking stuff on the tub and it's apparent that whatever is used to seal the deck cover to the tub has failed long ago.  The tank looks good as it was replaced by former owner in '97.  I'm thinking that I'm going to clean up what I can, unclog the little drain hole astern, and fish for the next five months until I remove the tank for complete inspection.  Meantime, how can I temporarily seal the fuel tub cover to prevent water intrusion for the rest of the summer?  Sillycone caulk?  I'd like something that won't give me trouble when I remove the cover in the fall and then, when everything is shipshape, what do I seal things up with for good?  PS I'm working on photos, just need time to read how to post.

Thank you for the reply, JJ.  I read the info on the link you provided and it sounds like this will do the temporary job I planned.  Very much appreciate your willingness to help!
