Beyond rebuild 19.6...UPDATED
« on: March 04, 2009, 11:23:06 AM »
Unfortunately, I have not begun my rebuild on my 170.  Instead of rebuilding, I took advantage of the calm seas to head down the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS).  PINS is located in south Texas between Corpus Christi and South Padre Island (Brownsville).  PINS has both bay access (Laguna Madre) and surf access.  The surf access is packed down sand for the first 5 miles and then 4 wheel drive is recommended.  The ~63 miles of beach is a surf fisherman’s mecca.  Unfortunately, the beach is littered with Hurricane Ike debris.  Immediately following, Hurricane Ike there was a small cold front that pushed the majority of Ike debris on the south Texas beaches.  The offshore currents along the Texas coast are strongest just off PINS therefore depositing the remains of Ike.  This is a concern as the national seashore is a hotbed for sea turtle nesting.

I came across this structure about 30 miles down the beach.  I meant to rub the hull ID to find out the build date among other things.  There’s a grey area with regards to whether the national seashore owns this vessel or not.  They routinely confiscate drug running boats that are ditched as they are of value at auction.  This guy is obviously beyond repair.  There’s not much left on her worth salvaging, but let me know if you’re interested in anything.  I didn't get a look at the starboard Aquasport placard.

Enjoy!

Hey RaiderRed,

I'll be down on the 14th helping out on the Beach Cleanup.  Maybe we can that thing off the beach.  I heard the Park Rangers were stopping folk who attempted to haul away registered craft like jet skis, boats and such.  Technically those are like stolen vehicles.  The current owner still has title.  I wonder what happend to the console and engine?

Too bad that looked like a decent hull before Ike got to it.  I guess we get and idea how well the floatation works.

We should meet up at the cleanup as I will be one of Billy's team leaders.  I've followed your comments on ClassicAquasport as well as Tyler's board.  I will have to drop you a line once I start my rebuild.

This photograph was immediately taken after the debris had come ashore.  It's hard to make out but two bay boats ran the shoreline from Packery Channel some 20 miles away to hook up to the drilling rig boat that was at the water's edge.  The boat that did the pulling was a 19.6 Aquasport, and it took a Tacoma to push from behind.  There was a lot of piracy when the federal rangers weren't looking.  The boat was a center console inboard with a whaler/aquasport/mako hybrid hull.

Richard, you want us to set it aside for you?   :P

Hopefully it is coming off the beach on the 14th.

You can have them for free if I can successfully remove them. Any ideas on how to remove the pop rivets?

As an update, I have traveled down the national seashore several times for surf fishing trips, but I never made it down past the above 19.6 till the weekend.  The badges on both sides are completely shot and riddled with dry rot.  Nothing worth salvaging on that hull.

If you think that was bad, check out the 17' AQ hull.  This was another 10 to 15 miles south of the 19.6.  Obviously there's nothing left on this one.  There are many more hulls on the beach that are remnants of Hurricane Ike.

Nothing left?  I see lots of usable parts on that 17.

-Casting deck and wells.
-Cable tray.
-Tank cover.

Heck, someone with a bad floor in a 17 could recore that off sucker and drop it right in.   :)
