under gunnel rod racks?

I have to decide soon if we are going to make some for the flatback.  What spacing is best?  The boat will not have a T-top, so rod storage is limited to 4 on the console, 4 on the leaning post and whatever I put on the deck.

Good question.  Whatever size you settle on be sure there's enough room to accommodate the reels so they don't get banged up or catch your leg as you walk by.  My 170's gunnel rod racks were usless.

My stock configuration is 3 under gunnel rod holders on each side.  I'm not sure of the exact spacing though.

I don't like to use them very much - I'd rather have 4 on each side of the console, 4 on the leaning post, and some rod holders on the transom and top of the gunnels for trolling.

I agree wholeheartedly - my under-gunnel rod holders were:
1) made out of wood with one big hole and one slot per holder - 2 per side
2) didn't contain the rods under way (hit a wave and one end of the pole was sure to be on the floor, in your way)
3) the pole area is a boxed in area about 6ft long - The poles I use don't fit within the "box"
4) must have been made for a short pole that had different reels that what I use.  The spinning reels I use lay on the rod below and stick out in your way.

One thing I found also with under gunnel storage is the danger of damaging the rod line guides.  I had a couple of rods damaged by them banging together.

 If I use them it will be for a deck brush and gaff (covered tip ).  Personally I do not like rods where they can be kicked or where you get s hook in your shin.

I think my spacing will be no more than 3', that will give me three frames between the rear bulkhead and the start of the casting deck.  So there would even be room for a flyrod (for those who do not like to catch fish   )
