Daisychain LED's?
« on: September 05, 2012, 10:14:06 AM »
Hey guys, Have a bunch of LED's around the base of my console. Can I tie them all together like christmas lights? Meaning basically have a commin positive and negative and jump each light off that? Or should each run come back to a bus?

I'm guessing it really does not matter either way, right?

Hey Fletch,

Yes you can daisy chain them with one power source and one ground. The amp draw is so low you could run them all around the boat..! If you think about it the LED strip lights are the same thing encased in it's own covering. I put 6 single LED lights on my sons Key West console in the way you are asking.

Kraw,

Thank you very much! I'm a complete neat freak, so I'm looking for ways to minimize as many wires as possible. As you know, there is next to no room under that console, so any clutter stands out like a sore thumb. With 2 batteries, an oil tank, and safery equipment, I'm guessing it's going to be a tight fit! However, it should be very "neat".

Hows your 17 coming along? She looks TINY next to the ocean runner! How do they ride? Thats one boat I've never had the opportunity to take for a spin.

The Ocean Master is a beast of a boat. They are built with at a minimun of 1" solid glass in the hull. They are also bullet proof and they have fired bullets into them..!! They only bad thing I can say is there is not enough deadrise at the transom. It's only 16 degrees. Excellent for trolling but bad for when it's really choppy and you trying to grt home in a hurry. Being 58 years old next month I can't take the pounding anymore..!!

We have been in some very bad seas and run it hard and nothing has ever stopped working, come loose, or broken. They are extremely well made.

With the 170 it's ready for the water whenever I get the steering and control cables. Also the engine harness conversion kit I need for a 1998 Evinrude engine.

Christian,
JFYI, Chris' LED tape light come with little 4-pin double-ended connectors that tie in each section of light, so you have only 1 power lead coning off the end...

Kraw,

I'm friendly with one of the guys who started Jupiter, and he had a OM. He loved the thing for fishing and diving, but he said the exact same thing as you, the thing would pound your fillings out. I think he used the expression "Trim tabs down, periscope up". However, he said when the seas were calm, it was one of the best platforms.

Bob,

Do you have a link to this tape? I have some led strips for the rod storage in the gunnels, and I've been pondering how the hell I'm going to mount them....this tape may work well?

The situation I have in the console is rigging the courtsey lights, which are on the outside.

I've noticed after being in some chop, the connector sometimes wiggles out.  Is there anything you suggest that would help keep it connected?

A little tape spanning the connector and the end of the light strip should do the trick...
