Distributor rebuild needed
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:05:22 AM »
Anyone know of a shop that rebuilds marine distributors?  The mechanical advance on mine is seized with rust.

It's not hard to fix that, and you may want to go ahead and update to an electronic system.  There is a neat kit that fits inside the distributor and replaces the points and condenser with a much improved electronic setup.  You can get the weights and springs for the mechanical advance at NAPA - just make sure you know the distributor model - or take it in...   Prestolite?

Or just pick up a new one on eBay for $20 or so...

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. GF.

Had a bear of a time finding parts, which I finally gave up on, for the original distributor (circa 1982) which was electronic with an external ECU, so I figured the hell with it and bought a new Mallory distributor with the ECU built right in.  Double element ballast is replaced with a single element and a fair amount of engine harness wiring goes away.  Problem rebuilding distributors is calibrating the advance curve.  If the curve's off, performance & efficiency go out the window. With this new system everything's now current production.
