Hey guys- sorry if I disappeared for a while- but I do have a legitimate reason for the lack of boat porn: I got married and was on my honeymoon. As I type I am preparing myself for the "your life is over" responses, but hey- what are friends for? :)
Anyway, thought I might share a brief recap of the trip with you. We started out in Key West and were married at the Hemmingway house. We had planned on a day offshore, but a front moved through and killed all chances of scoring the blackfins I so badly wanted to chase. I won't bore you with pictures of me in a suit... it looks a little out of character.
We then flew to Belize City, and caught a prop plane to Ambergris Caye, about 20 miles from the city. We rented a very cool house right on the Ocean, just north of the cut that divides the island into two parts. I will not go into details of the names of the places we stayed and guides we used (don't want to seem like I am advertising) but if you are interested, PM me and I can refer you.
Here is a shot from our porch looking out:
So we basically spent our time doing three things while we were there: Fishing, snorkeling/diving, and drinking/eating. As far as fishing, we went out on a couple of trips- flats and offshore. On the flats we caught so many bonefish that I actually wanted to catch something else. In one half day we caught over 15- most in the 2-3lb range. Here is a shot for you:
I only took pics of the first few we caught, because I didn't have time to grab the camera for catching so many fish. Here is Jodi with her first bonefish:
She got a little frustrated because I was catching them at about a 2:1 ratio of hers. Not to be outdone, she decided to snag a permit:
I was really hoping to grab a tarpon while we were on the flats, but none were around where we were fishing... maybe next time we can hit the grand slam.
We found a local dive guide who was VERY accomodating... great guy. He took us out for a few snorkel trips and a night dive at Hol Chan marine preserve. I have some underwater shots that are being developed... but for now, here's a shot taken from the bow of his panga.
We went out for a day of offshore, and didn't catch much. Had a billfish spit the bait on us, and only landed a huge barracuda. I was dissapointed, but we had to cut the trip short because the seas kicked up and the new wife got green. We headed in and did some reef fishing... snappers and such. I was really hoping to boat some Wahoo.
We also went to Caye Caulker for a day trip, and ate some amazing food at one of the local restaurants, Rasta Pasta. Here's a view from their place:
Here's a cool shot from one of the dive shops we hung out around- shows the water clarity well. Note the Suzukis... the only motors down there were Yamahas and Suzukis- I don't remember seeing one Mercury motor nor Evinrude:
All in all it was an amazing trip. The fishing was great, the food was soooo good, and the alcohol was cheap. If you're looking for a vacation somewhere very different than the typical carribean resorts, I recommend you look into Belize...
