Bilge pump location
« on: July 12, 2013, 04:43:43 PM »
own 2005 255 osprey. Bilge light on, batteries shut off. Good size waves, etc. the other day so wondering if float on pump stuck up. I know the pump needs to be located in the low point which I'm assuming is back near the batteries. Can someone confirm, direct me to the specific location and how best to test the float. Might be a bad switch. Weekend project. thanks

Open the starboard side access door, remove said door by sliding it on it's pins, stick your head in the opening and look down to your right...

Once you spot it, your next question will be how the hell do I reach it and service it?

and?
First attempt is simply to see if the float, if one exists, is stuck 'up'. Suggestions?
thanks

Battery dead. Fortunately pump only connected to first battery. Battery 2 good. Pump looks to be a complete enclosed system with no visible float.  Tapped, lightly banged on it. Turned on battery 2 and it stays off. Flipped bilge switch, goes on. Not sure if it'd stay on with battery 2 on.
Plan to run boat, try charging battery 1. If charges and no pump on - it'll be a good day

Well, did you see a float switch?  If so, TRY and reach down in there to activate the test switch.  If you didn't see a separate float, then you most likely have a pump with a built-in float.  So tell us what you got first.  I assume that your pump is always running based on the "stuck up" statement...

Bob does the Osprey have a forward bilge pump like an Explorer does?

No Bruce, just the aft one.  Could be a Rule-a-matic pump, with the test button on the backside of the pump.  Hold your finger on it for 3 seconds, pump comes on.  If it's the early ( :x ) version of the same pump, you have to remove it from the base and turn it upside down.  That out to be fun on an Osprey!!

You're right, no idea how to remove, replace the pump. As noted, tapped on the pump. Took the boat out so battery 1 could charge. So far the pump hasn't come on with battery 1 charged. Comes on via panel switch. Hopefully it was a stuck internal float.  Probably good to replace the pump this winter.

Thanks for the advice

I have a 250 Explorer and my tech replaced the Bilge for me back in the winter and told me to always leave it on but I had some motor problems second ride and have not heard the AFT Bilge at all.  I ran the boat all last year with no bilge.

Are these parts pretty universal for all boats and not Aquasport exclusive?  THe guy who installed it for me said it was a nightmare to reach.

Hoping this tapping idea works.
