Prospective purchase 1998 245
« on: July 09, 2024, 10:06:03 AM »
Hello! My name is David. I'm in Florida looking at a 1998 Aquasport 245. Not sure which version it is. Maybe Osprey. Title states length as 26.1 with what I think is an Evinrude 200. The boat was last used just shy of 2 years ago before owner passed. This would be my 1st refurb on a boat. Just trying to get an idea of exactly what it is and what I'm in for. The plan will be 1st thing, new trailer tires. From there is needs a DEEP cleaning. I have a quote from pics of $1800 to wet sand and buff the outer hull. Depending on what I find with pumps and mechanicals, I will replace as needed. I have also looked into a repower with a 2024 300hp Zuke. Soup to nuts would be about $25k. I THINK it has a 25" shaft but not 100% on that. There is a VERY mild soft spot between the casting desk and front seat. I think all cleaned up and checked out I can fish this for a while before deciding on a repower. Would like some input from more seasoned owners. There are more pics in my gallery. Not the best, I was in a bit of a hurry when I went to check it out.

Thanks,
David

I think theres a list somewhere on this site that includes a good list of things to look out for. Nice looking boat and that T Top looks pretty stout.
You mentioned pumps, I wouldn't trust the old bilge pumps those would be definite replacement item. Along with some re-wiring.
Hydraulic steering helms don't like sitting for a long time, the internal moving parts get sticky good chance the whole system needs to be flushed and ?
Negative side battery cables always seem to go first, low voltage to your electronics creates all sorts of gremlins.
Trim tabs probably need to be bled if hydraulic.
I'd give it a good wash and save the hardcore buffing for later.
Trailer axles, is it leaf spring or torsion bar? Leafs are easy to inspect, torsion bar just be sure the axle doesn't look rusty at all or you could be in for a nasty surprise they rust from the inside/unseen then bad things happen.
Trailer brakes, bunks and random brackets, lights...
Depending on how bad the soft spot is you might be able to fix that without much surgery.
Transom inspection?

Welcome aboard David.  That looks like a nice big fishing machine. The soft spot in front of the front seat could be the usual lack of support under the sole between the huge stringers in the boat. You might be able to look at that area from the fuel tank area.

Thanks Capt. Bob! I do but this looks more clear. Funny I found one just like the green and gold, 1997, minus the upper platform close to me in GREAT shape with same motors. I think he wants like $17k for it though. Seems a bit high with 1997 motors and "one soft spot"
