Got some questions. First off my boats transom is in good shape as of right now. That being said I'm looking at repowering due to lack of parts for my current motor. My transom still has the low cut and I'm worried about motor weight and if its worth closing in the transom. If I do so where should i start and how with closing in the back to make it a full transom. Any links to other threads would be appreciated or knowledge in general. I'm looking to do this so dumping a new motor on this older boat allows me to keep it for the foreseeable future.

To begin with you really need to determine how you plan on using the boat. The 222 looks good with a closed transom but if your not planning on going offshore, it performs great with transom mounted power.

Closing the transom is a fairly large undertaking if done properly. I would not consider adding some wood and tapering glass inside and out along with a closed cap acceptable. However, I think with the mindset of safety, peace of mind, and resale. I would consider the replacement of the wood in the transom a must if you were planning on closing it. Because, at some point, the wood is likely to rott and will make it that much harder to replace. Also, a closed transom requires the use of some sort of bracket which therefore drastically changes the loads on the transom and the center of gravity.  This requires you to install knees back to the transom for load transfer etc. Because of the change of gravity, it changes how it floats and wont self bail properly. Are you following me? I have an 81'-222 and my plan is keeping the notched transom (it was changed to coosa previously) and running it with a 6'' jack plate for a short while before my 240 is ready (complete rebuild with closed transom). Thank you so much, i am mainly worried about the weight of a modern motor like a 200 hp etc. if i go yamaha it isnt so much a worry but i kinda wanted to do suzuki. The transom still feels solid but i will test it again soon. As for your jack plate... do you like it and think it helps. I am kinda in between off shore and bay stuff so im trying to make the boat a little more reliable for the long hauls.

My $.02 is that the 222 can handle the weight of a 4S fairly well but the added 100 lbs will have an impact on the way the boat sits in the water.
If you close in the transom you need a way to raise the engine up so you can tilt it without hitting transom - a Jack plate, even 10" lift will not allow that because the setback is minimal. A Porta-a-bracket is an option if you have deep pockets. Another way is to bolt on a flotation bracket with enough setback to tilt the engine out of the water plus you get a platform to use.

I have found that sometimes a see some water coming over the transom already if the wave is just right and I’m drifting. I will have to look at my options. I’m leaning towards leaving the transom and maybe putting a bracket on later after the Repower when I have money and time for that. I was just trying to get a more educated view as there are lots of people on here with lots of good information on these boats. I’m not looking to get rid of mine any time soon either.
