No siphon valve on 1983 W/A?
« on: July 03, 2021, 07:16:16 PM »
Started trouble shooting my engine surging issues. Started with fuel tank intake area.  I had no anti siphon valve between barb and right angle block fitting which threads onto pick up. This is how it left factory, tank cover removed for first time, Also, no way to pull out fuel pick up to inspect sock.  Is this normal for 1983?

The not so normal for me would be the age of the tank.
Are you saying it's the original tank?

Yes Captain,
It is original tank and the exterior top of tank is all powder white from corrosion. I assume the inside is as bad because when I replaced 10 micron fuel filter, I poured out fuel into bowl. Fuel looked OK, however after letting filter dry out, I sawed the top off the
1 month old filter and tapped on paper element over glass dish. A lot of beige colored particles fell out of pleats. My guess is that these particles are parts of corrosion from the inside of tank.  I cant remove pickup tube from tank, so I have no way of know if there is a sock filter which is clogged causing my surging issues. Does anyone know if sock or some type of screen filters were used on early 80s factory tanks?
Thanks
Ed

Well, I'm not sure there is anything over the pickup line itself. When you removed the coffin lid was there any water present in the coffin bottom? I'm thinking the tank has lived way past its prime and is in need of replacement. I replaced the one in my 84 CCP in 96.

The beige particles sound like the years of varnish build up from non-ethanol fuel that have been dislodged with the use of ethanol mixed fuel.  :ScrChin:

Yes, Coffin lid waterlogged from water seepage around both inspection ports. Per your recommendation on a previous post, I ordered a new tank from Phil at Alloymetalworks.com. Phil is a real pro and is very accommodating. I ordered a 50 gallon replacement tank and Phil told me l can pick it up pick it up in two weeks.
