hello to all, I have lurked this site for the past few years. I had a 170 aqua, sold it now back in the game with a 200 osprey. I love the lines on these boats. Shes powered by a 1999 Johnson 90 hp 2 stroke. Now to the problem, idles ok runs WOT perfect but the transition from clutch ahead to any sort of throttle makes it fall on its face. To get it to go i have to rev engine and them put in hear and GO or it will still. Any advice? Or known issues? I am sure yall have heard all of it before. Plugs are new and I'm running off of pony tanks currently so no known fuel issues. Fresh gas sea foam and all. Its gotta be something dumb
Is the answer really to just clean carbs and if so where is the low side jet? Thank you everybody for looking

Welcome! I'm not a mechanic by a long shot but that sounds like a carb issue all the way

Check specs on your idle rpm. Could be as simple as adjusting the idle screw, if it's been messed with. Free to check and free to fix. But like Mike said, probably carb and I'd plan for that.

as mentioned sounds like the carbs need a good cleaning. also could be the timing advance mechanism but I'm not familiar with how to adjust that.

Agreed ^^^^. Pull carbs and clear jets. While they’re pulled might as well install new kits. Check float height is spec. Reinstall, time and sync.

So today I pulled carbs off and low and behold there's a tiny tube going from the bowl up to the body of the carb mahbe the width of #2 pencil lead. 3 out of 4 were clogged slam up. I bought a couple cans of carb cleaner and cleaned everything top to bottom. Needless to say it runs perfect now no issues whatsoever. And on the plus side the gentleman I bought it from said the choke actuator was bad and it had to be adjusted by hand... well these motors do not have a choke they have a bypass that sends straight fuel to the motor and its electronically actuated through a relay. I swapped a relay and poof everything works as it should. Yall wait this fall and winter im going to be doing a freshen up to include in deck rank T top leaning post and new paint. Stay tuned and thanks for the responses!!!

Update. Took it on the water this morning and had no WOT . So took carbs back off and realized floats were installed upside down by previous owner. I didn't catch it when I was in there and only figured it out due to a you tube video on rebuilding the same carb. So after swapping floats right and setting the float height it now runs on a hose and on the water perfectly. 32 MPH which I am happy with for a 90 on a 200 Osprey. If anybody has issues with these carbs or fuel issues period on a mid 90s to early 2000s Johnson or evinrudes let me know i have tore those carbs apart multiple times now figuring out what I was doing as I went along.
