AQ 22-2 History

Was doing a little research on the conception and building of the 22-2.  I found 2 conflicting reports, regarding the year the originally 1964 designed 22-2, known as flatback, was re-issued with 12º deadrise.  The historical data provided by member Steved lists this re-issue was in 1975.  A different member in the same thread stated the re-issue was in 1973, thus the flatback production was terminated in 1972 .  The quotes below...I've bolded in red what I'm referencing.  Anyone have the definitive answer as to the last year the 22-2 flatback was produced?

Working History part One

In 1964, Fred Coburn and Lennox Sargent, a naval architect, form C & S and produce the first Aquasports, a 22’2” open, modified-vee hull, center console, outboard-powered fishing boat. The boat is an immediate success. Shortly afterwards (date unknown), Coburn buys out Sargent.

In 1975, the 22-2 is re-issued in a new version with a Walters design, still with a modified-vee. All of the boats are called “Open Fisherman”.

The 22-2 name was used from the beginning and denotes the overall length of the boat at 22 feet 2 inches.  "Flatback" is the term commonly used for the original, almost-zero deadrise models produced until around 1972.  The 12 degree deadrise hull came out around 1973 and replaced the old 22-2 (flatback).

Anyone have the definitive answer as to the last year the 22-2 flatback was produced?

I've never been a Flattie Freak but my understanding from those who were/are is that 1971 was the last "production model year" but it was possible some hulls were laid but not registered until 72. This was common throughout Aquasport production with many models especially in the late 80s early 90s with the move from Hialeah to Bradenton.

Seen flatties and mod-V's both as "72's". So id say thats the cut off point. HIN's werent required til 72 also and ive never heard of a flattie having a full HIN, they just have serial numbers.      Sounds good enough for me

Yup boat building is not like cars... there is some model year overlap and I'm sure there were some leftover hulls at dealers that didn't sell right away.... also it is not uncommon for a MFG to retag a left over hull that has been sitting in stock as a newer model year....  I know even Genmar did that....
