150 ocean runner using to much oil

I have a 98 200 osprey with a 150 ocean runner. The motor runs great, but uses 2 gallons of oil in about 6 hrs of running and smokes like a train. I had air in the fuel system due to a bad pick up tube, but that did not fix the problem. Any ideas?

1. Remove cowling
2. Start engine
3. Find massive leak (it will be the one spewing 2 gallons of oil)

There is no external leak. That would be to easy.

If I'm not mistaken, don't these Johnsons have a VRO (Variable Ratio Oiling) pump? The idea behind the VRO is that it vary oiling to 100 to 1 at idle and 50 to 1 at full speed. It sounds like yours might be malfunctioning and is pumping far too much. I'd try to see about a replacement pump.

The vro pump was replaced and has less than 20 hrs on it. I would hate to think the pump is bad already. I haven't had the chance to vacuum test the pump due to rain.

After doing all of the test procedures in the manual, it turns out to be a bad diaphragm on the fuel side of the vro pump. Replaced pump and good to go.
