1990 Evinrude 88 SPL

Hey Guys,

Had the 170 on the water all weekend and things went pretty well. The ping-pong scupper valves work very well. Max cruising speed right now is 35 mph.  I still need to install a tachometer.  The Evinrude idles beautifully, and runs great at high speed. The problem I am having is when putting through the Harbor the RPMs sound to be very high and she sounds like she is struggling. This only happens at very low speeds.  Anyone ever have this problem?  As always I appreciate the input!!

Your throttle cable may need to be adjusted, but it is hard to say without looking at it, listening to it, and not having a tachometer.

I agree that is the most likely culprit. I've tried adjusting the thumb screw slightly but I didn't wanna screw with it too much.  I am getting a link and sync performed before next season but I'd like to try and smooth out the forward Idle as much as I can for the rest of the year.  Any advice on properly adjusting it?
