Restoring decals - need advice
« on: October 24, 2017, 01:15:30 PM »
Hi,

This is my first post on this forum - I've been following it off and on for years.

I've got 1988 170 Striper with the original 90 hp Johnson.  Its in pretty good shape.  I've owned it for nearly 20 years.  But the exterior decals are gradually deteriorating.   I thought about just stripping them all off and repainting with white all grip, but I really like the way the factory decals and colors (grey and dark blue on white) look.  So I am thinking about trying to restore them.  Maybe with a combination of paint and pin-striping?

Has anyone on this forum ever attempted something like this?

I believe this is the company I used...they can get you the color combination and size you want.  http://houseofgrafx.com/shop/  In the search bar, just enter aquasport and it will show you some options.  You can remove the old decal safely with an ABN Pinstripe Decal 4-inch Eraser Wheel Pad Sticker Removal Tool with Arbor (just google this part and Walmart has it cheap (just goes into a drill/screw gun).

I also used house of grafx for my 91 decals. I didn't care for the "silver/chrome" Aqua used on that model so I switched back to the mid 80's blue. Has held up very well and is very close to the original size and font.

Good stuff. :thumright:

Thanks guys for the tip on grafx.  I will probably go with the original silver / chrome.  And also for Sticker Removal Tool.  I did not know that such a tool existed.
