150 on a 175?

Hey guys. I have a 89 osprey 175 and I was wondering if a Merc 150 XR4 is too much motor for it? The reason I ask is because I plan to sell the osprey once my SeaCraft is complete but I LOVE the etec 90 thats on it. I was thinking of putting the etec 90 on my bass boat that now has the 150 and putting the 150 on the osprey to sell it. The lake I always fish on has a 30 mph limit so I dont need the 60mph of the 150 but I'd love the reliability and ease of use of the etec. Thoughts?

Check the weights on each and compare.  Too much weight on the back of the 175 will push the scuppers under water.

Right now the scuppers are about 1" above water at the dock when empty. The etec is 330lb. The merc is about 350-360 i think. Not a huge difference but perhaps big enough. My main concern was power. Is this too much power for this little boat? What is it rated for?

I agree with Wing but if you're limited to 30mph you might be ok until the sale. Of course you better resist the urge to get to 30 in10 feet

That was my concern was too much power. I wouldn't want to sell someone a boat that is unsafe. Thanks guys. I can always just sell the 150 separate from the boat I suppose.

If you use the coast guard formula, then it can take up to a 150hp engine, but anything over 350 will cause you to get water through the scuppers. I had a 140 on mine and it took the power fine though.
