Lower Unit Replacment
« on: April 03, 2016, 10:45:16 AM »
While running my 97 215 DC last weekend I noticed a change in engine sound while running back to the ramp at the Texas City. I drained the lower unit and water is pretty much the only thing that ran out with metal on both drain screws. I haven't pulled the prop but I'm thinking maybe the prop shaft seal failed. I am thinking of a lower unit replacement on my Ocean Pro 200. Does anyone have experience with Texas Outboards in Ft Worth? They sell complete replacements for 875.00 with a 3 year "no fault" warranty. Of course when you add zincs/trim tab/water pump/etc.. it adds up to around 990. I will be running with the family a lot this summer and the last think I need is a dead boat with an angry wife.

Sounds like they are selling you a SEI unit. Assembled here in Florida using imported parts.  http://www.sterndrive.cc
I know several members have had good luck with them. They do have a strict break in procedure though.

I think I will pressure test the lower and see if I need to change the seals. Im going to harbor frieght to get the parts to make a pressure tool then see how it goes.

If you have metal coming out of the gearcase drain, it's toast. Go price a new lower unit from BRP if you want some sticker shock. A new unit with a 3 year warranty for a grand out the door is a steal.
