Adding additional rod holders....
« on: January 08, 2016, 10:27:05 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has experience adding additional rod holders to a 1975 170. It currently has the two factory ones and I want to add at least two more. Has anyone ever used the clamp on style added to the factory swing back helm seat rails or attached to the transom? These will be used for trolling the Chesapeake Bay for striped bass....not for storage. Thanks!

Can't speak for a 75 but here's an 86 170 with a factory installed swing back seat and DIY rod holders.

Good luck. :thumright:

I put 2 rod holders in the bend of the liner near the small vertical hatch at the front of the boat - one on each side. I drilled through the liner and I could reach the back of the screws via the hatch.  I haven't tried to troll with a pole in them.
Here is a pic of what I'm talking about

I also put 4 rod holders on each side of the console for storage.

Mine has it on them and I am not a fan. Mostly it is because you have to duck under it to get the back of the boat to get bait, prime the bulb, etc. I think it would be better to put them in the gunnel or  at the back of the boat for storage underway.
