Factory liner removeal
« on: November 01, 2015, 01:33:45 AM »
Now that the weather is cooling off might pick back up on my 19.6 rebuild. Has anyone removed the factory liner and left it out? I am thinking about doing this so I can make the inside very simple and custom. Similar to a hand finished panga with rolled gel and webbing. I'm guessing would need to beef up the inside of the hull with a layer of 1708 and maybe "core mat". Does the liner add much structurally or is it just for a nicer look? Thanks in advance guys!

I guess it depends on the liner.
On my 170 I'm sure that the liner stiffened up the hull since it has the cap, the floor and casting deck attached, plus they were all made as one piece.  The floor is bonded to the stringers, the cap is screwed to the hull side top so I would think that will help to stop twisting.  The casting deck may not be bonded to the stringers but being a part of the whole piece probably helps with rigidity?

What year 196 do you have - we can look through the catalogs and see what the liner looks like.

Also, if you build a nice solid stringer grid with bulkheads to the hull sides, it might stiffen the hull enough to do what you want.
Maybe Joel can jump in here since he has the experience and design software to figure it out :?:

It's a 74 so the gunnel cap is separate and the liner is a bit different than the 17. It is closer to the hull insides. I was think that doing the core mat on the sides would stiffen it up a lot more with out the liner but then again I have never done it

Looking at this early '70s catalog
it looks like the liner is like the 22-2 of that age - a cap and a "cover" of the raw glass along the sides - maybe 3/8" thick and lightly bonded to the hull sides (to hide the raw glass).
The stringer system stiffens the hull and the cap may help with structure - not sure.
So, I think that you can do whatever you want as long as the stringer system is strong and anything else you can tie into the hull and hull sides will make it stout enough to not twist.

Hey Mark. My 19-6 '73 is the same. I'm in the process of rebuilding too. :thumleft:  The liner is only glued to the top edge of the sides up at the rub rail. It's only about 2" of attachment there. Then it drops and becomes the floor where of course it's was glued to the stringers. The liner and cap together definitely keeps the sides from flexing. There is hardly any room, maybe 1/2 inch, between the liner sides and the sides of the boat. I have decided to keep my liner sides mainly because it is a nice molded piece and will require minimal fairing. And it's ORIGINAL! I know it's tempting to just remove the liner sides but it also lends a hand in keeping wires hidden.

Thanks for jumping in on this Sean.  Having someone in the same part of a build really helps with strategy, confidence building, etc.   :salut2:

Thanks guys!! My plan to remove it is because my hatches in the front need a good deal of work. Also if I pulled it and layed some layers of glass and core Mat to stiffen it back up. Then do the rolled gel and webbing hand finished style. It won't be near as nice but save money and time " I think" as opposed to making it all perfect for awlgrip. Plus I have always loved the simple was of Pangas. Maybe I could make it like one and not loose with narrow beam they have. Maybe I'm crazy too hahah thanks
