Looking at buying a 222 need advice.
« on: June 22, 2015, 03:18:37 PM »
I am looking to buy a 222 aquasport. The boat has been being stored on a trailer and has been sitting for at least 7 years. I pulled the cover off the boat and checked the hull out today. I believe the stern has been replaced and is in sound shape and the deck isn't soft at all. I think the hul is a mid to late 70s. The motor is a 80s model 115hp V4 evinrude, unknown condition as of now. Dual axle galvanized trailer. Trailer brakes need work and lights need replacing. Over the boat just needs to be cleaned up and ran through I believe. The current owner would like to sell and said he was hoping to get 4-5k for everything. I'm thinking he has his hopes pretty high. I don't have really any experience in buying/selling boats so I was wondering what you classic owners would think a fair starting point would be. I'm not a wealthy man but I'm very good with my hands and can work on just about anything and I'm not afraid to bring this jewel back to life. I appreciate and information and advice and I have really enjoyed looking at all of your projects. Great site here with great information.  Thank you.

Joe

Joe,
If you haven't already, start by reviewing this thread from our Resource forum.

Remember, these old boats are only worth what someone will pay. Some pics (if you have them or can take them) will help in getting good insight into what you are looking at and a better feel for its value.

Good luck. :thumright:

If the boat is later than '72 there should be a HIN (Hull ID #) stamped into the rear of the transom - the last 2 digits are the year.

Thank for the replies and the link.  I will read it thuoughly. I did search the transom for a stamped no,her, but as I said I suspect the transom has been replaced and that number wasn't saved? There is however a factory plastic plate on the inside of the stern on the port side. It didn't have a year but it did have a serial number. I will try to get by there again and take some pictures.  The boat doesn't seem to be going anywhere. How worried would you guys be about the motor? Complete tear down to fix/check all components and seals etc? I was going to try to turn it over b hand first to make sure it isn't seized, if it's not, compassion test.  Anything else? Thanks for the help..

Could be a model earlier than 72 then - look like this - from a '60s Flatback

Look at the rear of the boat and look at the bottom of the hull.  Is it flat like this one?

How worried would you guys be about the motor?

30+ years old. Not exactly a selling point but.... those older motors were fairly reliable and are easy to work on/maintain.

Complete tear down to fix/check all components and seals etc?

At the very least, new impeller/t-stats/pressure release (if equipped) valve/change lower unit oil/new plugs/carb clean and or rebuild/new battery/remove prop and grease shaft.

I was going to try to turn it over b hand first to make sure it isn't seized, if it's not, compassion test.

Save the compassion test for your significant other. You may want to pull the plugs and squirt a little lubricant in each cylinder before turning it, if it has not been spun in several years. A stuck ring might break when it becomes "unstuck". You could then try a compression/leak down test. We have a few outboard piston heads on board here that can help you with the beast.

Pics...... :ScrChin:

Good luck. :thumright:
