need help on floor! I own a 1974 aquasport 170
« on: April 24, 2015, 12:14:54 AM »
Hello, I'm new on here. I own a 1974 aquasport 170. I bought it about a year ago and I'm just now starting to realize that the floor on the boat was just painted over the wood, now the paint is starting to Crack and open. I was wondering what was the best way to go about fixing this. The floor still seems solid. Can I sand the floor and just add a resin or gel coat? Thanks in advanced for all the help!

Post up some pix so we can get a look at what you have and can better give some guidance. Follow this simple tutorial http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0
If it is indeed just wood you might be able to grind the paint off, resin coat it, lay some glass over it and then gelcoat with non-skid.  Or kiwi or paint with non-skid but we need to see what you have first.

That sure looks like bare (unglassed) plywood to me too.  Bummer.
If you look inside and under the hatch what does the underside of the wood look like? Also what do the stringers look like?  You can stick your camera in and take pics. Look in all hatches if there is more than one.
If the underside of the wood is not sealed it's just a matter of time before the thing disintegrates. If you want to use it until you have to tear it apart maybe you can seal the top and then put some non-skid on it.  I think you'll have to grind or sand all the topcoat off that is on it right now so you don't have a compatibility issue.  Then you have some options after that.
I think you should survey the underside first before you decide how much labor and materials you want to invest in the top side.
Maybe someone else has some ideas?
