Complete re-wiring of my 1986 250XF
« on: March 04, 2015, 12:13:33 PM »
Hi Guys,
Been a while since I've been on here as work taken over the last couple of years.
I am thinking that the time has come to replace all of the wiring properly on my boat as there are odd issues happening and most of it does not look like tinned wire, just copper.

Firstly I have two big batteries, one that runs the Starboard engine and also powers the Bennett Trim pump and the second that runs the port engine and all of the accessories on the boat.

I noticed major issues with battery power dropping while drifting using the Lowrance HDS 7 chartplotter last year. So I plan to add a house battery and a Durite 12v 140a intelligent charging relay between the house and Port Battery.

At the Stern of the boat I have a Bennett Trim Pump and a Bilge Pump that require power. In the middle of the boat the Fuel Tank requires a ground and sender, but also planning to connect a new Lowrance NMEA EP-65R fluid sensor to this.

The rest of the items like stereo/lighting and Lowrance HDS 7 can be hooked up at the Console.

I have looked on the forum and found a few bits of info. Looks like the main positive from the House battery to console should be 8 Gauge Tinned Wire. The ground would need to be also 8 gauge to a ground Terminal plate mounted at the console. I have heard that a Blue Seas 12 gang Terminal Block would be good to meet all the wires. Each engine battery has its on 2 position shut off switch although the combine setting number 2 does not appear to be connect up.

Would also be interesting while doing this work to add the ability of shore power if we want to stay overnight on the boat.
I have rewired all most of the console wires that go to toggle switches with Tinned wire.

Would be great to have any advice from experience of doing this job and even better if someones had to work on the 250XF as the main wiring tunnel below the console is very tight full of wires that I think this is going to be very fiddly.
Also haven't a clue how i'm going to get the NMEA Fluid level sensor wire to the Fuel Tank.

Regards

Jonathon

Good to hear from you again Jonathon.

First, here's a couple of threads on shore power:

And a schematic about 6 posts down. Yes a different model but the wiring will be the same of course.

Hooking up the fuel level sensor you may need to remove the fuel tank hatch in order to snake in what you need. You needed to re-chalk it anyway.

Sounds like you have a game plan.

Good luck :thumright:

Thanks Bob,

I want to have the boat completely electrically safe, as have odd moments with engines randomly not starting when out at sea. Its great having two engines but If theres underlying bad earth issues that can be ultimately put right then I will be happier at sea.

Have lots of pictures of the 250XF to share, so need to find a way upload them soon.

Regards

Jonathon

Hi Jonathan - welcome back.
Posting pix is easy, seems the hardest part is uploading them to the site here.  If you're using a PC, follow the pictorial in the link http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0 - it's very easy to do everything.  Open the link in a new tab in your browser so you can read along as you do the actual work on the tab of the site.
If you're using a tablet or smart phone it is a little harder only because how you do things are a little different on them, but the end result is the same.

Let me know if you need help.
