The Old Man would have been hollering "BALANCE THE BOAT" right up to the point of disaster then I would have been sent overboard to retreave the errant outboard....

This happening like it did is why I always tethered my small motors with a small chain onto the transom!

I read this years ago; that the lenght of chain needed is enough to let the powerhead submerge while still being teathered to the boat. If the chain is too short, the engine can actually still run while attached to the boat via the chain with a high risk of the engine landing in your lap with a 5000 rpm buzz saw attached. This made perfect sense to me...
