Alarm sounding
« on: October 24, 2014, 08:30:36 PM »
Hey all,
Went to take the boat out last week and had starting issues like I did a few weeks back. Someone suggest water/fuel separator filter replacement and it's proven to be the issue. Most likely from the beginning......Anyway, went to start her up tonight with earmuffs before taking her out tomorrow morning and an alarm is sounding. Now I had a new water pump installed last year and the oil reservoir is about 1/4 to a 1/3 full. Exhaust is burning and smells of oil, Telltale is blowin water just fine......In the past, when I've topped off the oil reservoir, the alarm would sound for maybe 5 to 7 minutes before becoming silent. The reason I mention this is that the fuel/water separator is mounted directly above the oil. I was all up in the compartment last week. Maybe just bumpin that thing around caused it to set off the alarm, tho the alarm did not sound the last few times I've started her up since filter replacement
What do you guys think? If I'm blowin water out the telltale and my oil is being mixed, is it ok to run it for awhile to see if the alarm dies?
     Appreciate your thoughts

This needs to be moved to the engine woes forum. Now for an answer, or really a guess, from someone not familiar with the merc warnings as much as Johnson. I would think that no alarm should sound for as long as you describe. Not sure about a merc but on my oil tank if I remove the sending unit on the oil tank as I pull it out of the tank with the key on the alarm will show low oil. If I continue to remove it and the float drops the no oil light goes off. Hopefully someone will respond (like Fitz) that will give a better idea!

Tell us more about the alarm, is it one long beeeeeeeeeeeep, or is it a series of four short beeps every two minutes?  One long beep is the overheat alarm and the four short beeps is the oil alarm.  Check the oil tank that is under the cowling mounted to the block.  If the level is low that is the source of the alarm.  If this is the case, with the motor running crack the cap on the oil tank on the motor and you should see the oil level rise.  As the oil begins to overflow close the cap, do not over tighten.

What Blue said - there are different horn sounds for different problems.  Beep-beep-beep-beep is usually oil related, whereas continuous Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep indicates overheating situation, etc.  Ya gotta know yer beeps to figger it out...

So they were intermittent beeps.....beep....beep...beep...etc. pulled the sensor cap off the oil reservoir while it was running. I added 2 stroke oil directly. Beeping stopped. I was sure I didn't over tighten but as we came i tonight, I noticed a lot of oil in the water. As I pulled the cap off and inspected it, I noticed it was cracked........Any suggestions on where to pick up one of these '01 Merc 2 stroke oil sensor caps? I've been looking all evening and I'm goin crazy here.
Appreciate all the help

Run twin 2003  Mercury three cyl. two stroke 75's. Both of the original yellow internal oil reservoir caps are cracked and leaking lube when the engines are tilted full-up, trailering position. Port side more than starboard. Tad wider crack.

Will replace both this winter with the correct spec Merc part from our local dealer.

Contact your local Merc dealer.  Pay 4 bucks more for the real deal...they'll get it right.

Thanks for that. I don't have the serial no. tag on my motor mount and when I registered this motor with parks n wildlife, the number I gave them I pulled off somewhere on the motor body, I still have the picture I took of it, however, it is not a valid SN. Don't know why or how they let me register ths motor with a wrong SN. Be that as it may, I was looking for freeze plugs or whatever with the SN. Found a thread that said one is at about 5 oclock, but that I may have to remove the lower cowler. Does this sound correct for an '01 Merc 200 2 stroke? an other ideas.........Also, I found some oil reservoir, complete with cap on eBay, but a '89 to '97. Now, obviously I'm only interested in the cap. Do you think it's the same size? I would think so, just the body is probably different.

Ya, it's a pinch at that price, but if it'll work, it may very well be easiest. Wouldn't think a new cap is a whole lot cheaper

The part number should be 43300A9.  $17 is a good deal - ones on eBay are higher:
