Photobucket links gone bad - found a fix
« on: July 14, 2017, 05:52:52 PM »
Hi all,
Yep, it's a bummer.  A lot of people stored all their photos on photobucket and it was free and a good place to host and link from.  Now they changed their business model and want to charge $399/year to use their site to link from.

Do you have pix that are showing that image that says "Please update your account...." ? If you want to pay the $399/yr to post links from their site that is the easy fix.

If you're like me and aren't going to pay that then I offer you this: I can fix all the links if you provide me new ones.  You can upload your pix to here, into your gallery or use another free hosting site and then give me the IMG codes for each of your posts - it's a lot of work on both of us but if you take just a few posts a day then it will happen and not be over bearing.  I have hundreds of posts here and other sites that I need to fix for my links  :pale:

Thanks Rick for all your work.  One of the things that I truly apreaciate about this site is the ease of posting photos.  But, I'm sure that much of that ease comes at the expense of a whole lotta work on the part of you and others.  Thanks for setting up this site and keeping it working. :nSalute:

I received a message from a member today (Flapilot) and he explained that he found a fix for this Photobucket ransom problem. I tried what he found and it indeed brought all the images back   :danceSm:
This is a great example of members taking care of members and why Classicaquasport.com is a great place to hang out. Thank You Flapilot  :salut2:

This is a google search result when searching on "photobucket embed fix"
https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GGGE___US600US603&ei=NmBLWvbRFYORmQHN-onYAw&q=photobucket+embed+fix&oq=photobucket+embed+fix&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0l9.107738.107738.0.110244.1.1.0.0.0.0.201.201.2-1.1.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..0.1.201....0.ozLhrd16MMc

You'll notice that there is a fix for Chrome and Firefox (mozilla) - I didn't search deeper for a IE fix but there must be one out there.

I use Firefox and it is an add-on that you install. Go to the toolbar and open menu.  Click on Add-ons, click on "Extensions" on the left and then look to the upper right and in the "Search all add-ons" paste in "photobucket embed fix" and click the search and the add-on will appear.  I installed the Oct2017 version. You might need to clear cached images (clear your cache) and also refresh the page.

On a side note - Photobucket is now offering to unblock the images for a personal website......for $119.99/yr.

Oh my! :great02:

You need to pin this. :ScrChin:

I wonder how long this will last until PB does some sort of "legal" block. Could get interesting.

Gotta love this:

On June 28, 2017, Photobucket changed its Terms of Use regarding free accounts and third party hosting (hosting on forums, eBay, etc). Only the most expensive plan, at $399.99 per year, now permits third party hosting and linking to forums.[11]

This new business model has caused thousands of forum DIY's and write-ups with explanatory pictures to be rendered useless. About 500 words into the linked document was a declaration that free accounts would no longer permit image-linking to third-party sites. eBay and Etsy have also been affected, in addition to many forums and blogs.[12] Thousands of images promoting goods sold on Amazon and other shopping sites have been removed after the photo-sharing service changed its terms, causing a great deal of controversy. One user was quoted as saying: "The CEO of Photobucket will have trouble getting a job digging a garden after this."[citation needed]

On September 13, 2017, Denver Better Business Bureau gave the company an "F" rating, the worst they issue, citing fifteen complaints related to the change in terms and no response from the company.[13]

$119.99 eh. Looks like the price of poker has gone down.

This thread has always been pinned. I'll make it a Global Topic.

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing.  Saves us $119.99 ;-)
