So I am on the west coast and currently have a 1978 170 that is in great shape and is dialed in to the way I fish. However, since I acquired this boat five years ago and fell in love with the hull I have been on the lookout for a 19-6.  Well lets just say I have seen only a handful of 170's and never a 19-6 until now.

Looking for your thoughts on this hull that I came across. Unfortunately the only way that I could make this boat work, assuming it is good shape when I look at it, is to gut the 170 for all of the useable parts to "rebuild" this 1975 19-6.  This would include using the 115 HP Mariner on my current boat.  The downside would be watching the 170 go from fully functional to basically a hull that would look like the one in to pics.

My main questions are 1) will I be compromising performance with the 115 HP? I know some of you run similar HP, 2) do you think the price is in the right ballpark assuming the hull is in good shape? I know markets are different and boats are worth what someone is willing to pay for them! 3) would you dismantle a perfectly good boat just to get a bigger one that will otherwise be the same? I know that last one is probably not a reasonable question since we are all looking for different things in our boats, in my case the extra length and fuel capacity would open up another level of boating opportunities.

its basically your 170 with a taller cap and 2.5 feet longer.  itll definately ride a little softer than the 170 but still slams in its own right since it isnt a deep-v.  i take mine offshore in 2-3 with zero issue.  i would feel fine in 3-4.  even bigger with a long period and mates that wont freak on me.  

pretty much assume itll need a transom.  especially since the motor mount holes arent filled, its had rain water in it.  but if its solid, its solid.  a new trailer will run $16-1800 depending on where you go.  cheaper used.  single, heavy duty axle will work fine.  nice paint job, blast and powdercoat the tower and she will look great and be very functional.  restore the teak, etc.  i would try to get below $1k with it.  cash rules.  through $800 on the deck.  he'll take it.

btw, technically, thats a 200 osprey.  the 19'6 has the short cap like your boat.

Thanks for the response. The cap caught my eye, looking more like the 200 Osprey.  Not sure the history, but the emblems are 19-6 and he said the HIN matched with a 1975 hull.  Was that cap on the mid '70s models at any point?

I have had my 170 offshore 30 miles on many occasions and know its limits and keep a close eye on weather and plan accordingly. The benefits for me would be fuel capacity, more deck space, and the extra length would provide some benefit in the water conditions we typically face here.

Here's the deal.

Transom has already been mentioned.
The deck has been compromised (penetrations that probably were not sealed that well) so it may also need replacement).
Fuel tank.
Properly sized trailer
Other areas that we can't see from 2K miles away.
The 115 will push it.

That stated, using your 170 for a donor isn't blasphemy. I used my 222CCP as one for my WAC. Another zealot member grabbed the hull, motor and trailer, added missing parts and let the four winds blow. Boat is in use and running great.

From what you say, the 170 is a tart and no offence the 19-6 is a fart. Doesn't mean you're not looking for a project but....

I bought the WAC which was in good shape structually. I kept the motor. No major glass work. Replaced the tank.
This made the switch more realistic (trim tabs, batteries,lighting,Bimini top, instrumentation etc.)

It was hard stripping my old CCP. Like your 170, I put a lot of time into it but I wanted the different model and I got lucky with finding a good exchange.

CB,

Pretty excited about finally seeing one within 2k miles of my house. I am two hours away, my dad is 10 minutes so he will take a look at it. I know there is work involved, but can't do it without making the 170 a donor and obviously picking up a new trailer. No place to put it for a rebuild and keep the 170 out of the equation. That would be my preference but not an option right now .

That is a 19-6 not a 200. Here is a pic from 1978 that I took in Marathon, Fl. These were the 3 19-6s that we were able to use at the condo there. They were brand new. Notice the cap, I think it started showing up like that around 1976. Even cooler check the motors, yes those are Johnson 70s and yes they ran just fine with them on the back.

You could run that boat with a 60 if you had to.

Best can tell from the pics, the transom top on the port side looks open and rough. And agree with CB....she's been run hard and put to bed wet, as we say in these parts.

Pick her up as cheap as you can waving green $$ as redemn suggests. Beat it up on the money aspect with the seller.  Run your 170 for the rest of the season....deal with the structural stuff on the 19-6 as time allows. Then hatch a plan for the transition this winter.

We don't have a winter in SoCal! I fish all year long as long as "outside" commitments don't keep me off the water. Sending someone to look tomorrow and may have a place to store it if I can get the price low enough.

We'll see.

The more I run my 19-6 the more I love it.  Have gotten stuck in some shallow stuff, some rough stuff, some windy stuff, and some flat out calm and beautiful stuff.  In every case I've been tickled considering her size and age.  I'm running a 115 Mercury inline 6 currently, but hopefully tomorrow will be swapping it for a 130hp v4 Yamaha.  The 115 Merc ran it to a high 30's top-end and had plenty of power for every situation I've had it in (including having 7 people in her, 3 of which were in the "hoss" weight class).   Adding to the list of potential costs you'll incur: fuel tank.  Just received my replacement tank as the original started peeing in the bilge.  Very impolite of it.

The 222 is giving me dirty looks every time I hitch up the 19-6.

I have a 73 19,6 with a 115 yamaha and she does 39mph full fuel. Never felt underpowered.  Any more weight out back and i would have issues with water in boat with more than me aboard.

i have a '96 200 osprey and before i stripped the boat for a rebuild, she was a great hull, could fish skinny, handled a chop OK. not too big to take out solo, not to small with a buddy or 2... ran mid 50's with a 200hp evinrude, ran upper 30's with a 112hp johnson... ive been trying to sell my boat for quite some time as i am doing a '68 22-2 flatback rebuild instead... she's stripped and all the hard work was done, just waiting for someone to put her back together...
