Scupper Question
« on: July 23, 2014, 09:00:53 PM »
I own a 2000 Aquasport 161 Tourniment Cat hull. The scuppers are about 1 inch below the water line with boat empty. When I am in it , it is well below the water line. I installed a shut off cock pit valve in the hose between the floor drain and the scupper to solve the problem of water coming into the boat. I belive this is a bad design problem, how ever my question is do you think it is because the foam in the hull is wet. It would be very difficult to remove it. I did cut out a small piece and it was damp but not extremly wet.

The only way I can see to get the foam out would be to cut a hole in the floor of the boat. Something I really do not want to do.
I believe some one had said the type of foam made in year2000 does not really hold water and get very heavy.

My big problem is that I want to keep the boat in the water next year and need to come up with a way to resolve this so the boat does not sink. I have tryed several types of scuppers and even installed a check valve in the hose. Nothing really worked right. Some scuppers and the check valve stopped the water from coming in but did not let it out.

Thanks
Gary

What size motor do you have on her?  I don't think the foam on the newer boats can hold water since it is closed cell foam.

Gary, you've got a weight problem somewhere...  Maybe it's foam, maybe it is water in the bilge, or maybe it is the motor and batteries toward the stern.  But the boat should be self-bailing at rest.  See if you can find where the extra weight is and you should be able to fix the problem.  Otherwise, I see a boat lift in your future...

How long have you owned the boat?  Has it always sat like this?

I have owned the boat 4 years and it has always sat this way. There is a 90HP Johnson on it. There is no water in the bilge. Bilge is very small on this boat, it is a 16ft Cat hull. There are 2 batterys on it ,one foward and one aft.The gas tank is infront of the center consol.

This boat is a rare bird. Not very many made or sold to my knowlege. They were onlt made for 2 or 3 years. Mine is a 2000.

Thanks
Gary.

Gary,
I would imagine your 161 has sat low from the day she came out of the factory.  I used to build her big sister, the 230, and her cockpit drain hoses actually ran slightly uphill to the t/hulls...the 161 very similar.  When the president of AS/WC found these molds, bought them, and had them brought over to Sarasota, the cockpit sole was lowered to provide more depth...lowered basically to the waterline, or just above it.  So any weight gain over the course of the boat's life was/is just going to make her sit lower in the water.

Even cutting the cockpit sole open over the sponsons and digging out all the foam, you'd still be getting back to just barely above the waterline...

Thank you very much for the information. You saved me alot of painful work removing the foam. By the sound of it there is no fix. The good thing with my boat is that the drain hoses do run down hill. Do you think if the boat is emtpy in the water, enough water would be able to drain and she would not sink ? The boat seems to perform well, it does not feel like it is running heavy. She jumps right up on plain and goes about 32mph. At 3800 to 4000 rpms it goes about 24 mph.
