Tilt and Trim Trouble Again!!!!
« on: June 20, 2014, 04:33:44 PM »
School is out and ready to get back on the water in my 97 215 DC w/200 Johnson. Last year I replaced my T&T motor after cutting it off with a reciprocal saw due to frozen ram pin and manual release screw. A couple weeks ago the T&T wouldn't work so I checked the connections and "wiggled" them. After holding the trim button it finally started to move. Up and Down worked great. Today went down to pre trip the boat and the T&T was down again. It makes a very low and slow sound at the motor like the motor is trying but can not get up to speed. hooked T&T motor straight to battery to bypass switch and still very quiet sound with not movement up or down. Battery is fully charged. I hope it isn't a frozen piston or contamination in the cylinders. And to top it off the manual release is still frozen. frozen, frozen!!!! Good news is that it is almost in the full down position so I could still take it out and use it in a degraded state. Bad news is that it is in the down position and I cant get to anything to trouble shoot. unscrewed the reservoir cap and fluid came out. Any help will be appreciated.

Well Grizz... Since the manual release is the ONLY thing accessible without removing the engine, I'd spend ALL your time focusing on working it loose.  It's a necessity for regular T&T maintenance anyway.  Have you tried impact air tools?  heat? penetrant? etc?  There's a thread here somewhere that found a study that looked at penetrants and some form of acetone/oil mix I think    turned out to be heads above the rest. Very basic question and not trying to insult at all :?: , but do you have a large enough screwdriver to get the torque you need?  I have a big MAC flathead probably 16-18" long with easily a 5/8" wide blade and a hex shank that allows me to attach a wrench for extra torque.  Hasn't failed me yet.  Sometimes having THE right tool makes all the the difference.  I've labored for DAYS on projects where I didn't even know a specific tool existed only to find out I could've bought it for $100 and finished in a couple hours....Just sayin'. :salut:  Also, can you use a meter to at least make sure you're getting full power to the pump motor?  Connecting directly to the battery at the other end eliminates power source/switch issues, but not circuit faults that might be further downstream so you do need to see if the full 12+ volts is getting to the motor.

Post back with any additional info or updates based on these suggestions.

Also, sometimes an impact screwdriver will back out a screw that I'd bet a year's salary would strip before it loosened...few whacks with a hammer on that impact screwdriver and out she comes.

Thanks, I bought an impact wrench a few months ago to get a stubborn lower unit screw to come out. I have a big flathead also. I will be removing the swim ladder today to help get a better angle on the screw and sprayed with PB Blaster last night. I will look for a long flat bit for my craftsman cordless impact drill today. I'm about 30 min away from my boat so Ill try to get everything I need before heading down. Glad I have a Harbor Freight Tools 5 min away. Thanks again, I hope my next post will be that I got the screw to move.

I had a tilt/trim assembly that had a frozen manual release screw
I had taken the assemble of a blown Yamaha V6. I tried  every thing to break it loose, pb blaster, heat, impact driver, never got it to  move. Eventually there was no head left on the screw and I ended up  throwing the unit way.

Good luck

Well that wasn't exactly inspirational

To be clear, I mean impact screwdriver...the black thing you whack with a hammer...not an impact "gun"...

But, I agree with Bill...Good luck!

And I was using a impact "screw driver"

Impact wrench=bent bit, Cordless Impact Drill= Shattered Bit, Big A$$ Screwdriver + 255 lbs leaning into it= chewed up screw head. Still does not budge. Directly hook battery and let the motor tick, tick, tick. It moved up 2-3 mm. Must have debris in the pistons/cylinders. I will have to take it some where to remove the engine and replace from behind. I might use the boat as is with no tilt and trim until fall comes around. Anyone know a deep hole close enough to swim back to shore around Galveston Bay, ha ha.
