Putting a hole in my boat. Need help.
« on: April 15, 2014, 04:23:24 PM »
I am upgrading to Simrad NSS EVO and a B175W transducer. The question is.....where do I put the ducer. Already have the NSS.....it's a nice upgrade from my old HDS8 Gen1.

The FF has strakes right about at the bottom(green) bunk if memory serves. Maybe a little inwards. Will that disturbed water flow straight back, toward the keel or up and out toward the sides?

Need to know because it's a big hole and want to be on the right side of the strake.

Has anyone mounted a through hull on a FF or similar hull? Do you have pictures or dimensions?

Thanks.

Kid, I've done a bunch of B60's and B260 t/hull ducers, your 175 (CHIRP) is basically the same concept when it comes to location...you want good clean water passing over the "lens", or you lose bottom as speed increases.

If you indeed have a strake somewhere near that green carpeted bunk, I would want to install the ducer to the inboard side between the strake and the keel, and as far forward as I could get it.  The waterflow along the strake is going to be fairly tight to it, but once the strake ends, the water will fan out in a cone shaped manner.

But don't trust me.  Call Airmar, describe the hull bottom, and see what they have to say.  They are EXTREMELY helpful when it comes to ducer location... :thumleft:  :thumleft:

Make sure that you have clean water flow in front of the ducer location and have it back enough it will still have clean flow on place at speed. Also match the deadrise angle to the ducer you buy, they come in couple dif angles.  Mine was a 20 degree.  Check out my thread.. I just installed a B60.  Pic below.

Hope it helps,

So I am putting between keel and lower bunk. Due to access I have to install as close to the transom as possible. The big splashwell only has 6" pie plates. I tried installing a larger rectangular one but it wont work with my motor and kicker location. I have an 8" pie plate I may install.

Curious as to why you would recommend as far forward as possible. I would think as far aft would be be better. Any way, that's my only choice with splashwell config.

Water coming off a strake will react just like water coming off the transom.  The water slow will stay relatively tight to the strake...until the strake ends.  Then it fans out in a cone shape, and becomes more turbulent as there is no longer a feature that will exert a force on said water.

That makes no sense.....well I understand and agree about the flow of water and turbulence....but that should dictate putting the ducer as far aft as possible. While moving forward the transom cant affect the water 5"-6" forward of it.
