Establish a purchase price?

How do you establish a purchase price on an older boat? Considering the purchase of a 1981 22 CCP with a 2006 Johnson 200 HP motor. I'd usually hit the ads across the country, possibly NADA values, maybe BUC value, but there's not many 1981 boats out there so how are prices established? Owners looking for $7950 and I'm thinking possibly in the $6500 range.

Try Boattrader.com for a price avg.  Break the boat into pieces price wise - boat, motor, trailer.  See if it adds up to what you think it is worth - that's the key, what you feel it's worth.

Ask about the tank....as in when was it last replaced.

To me, that's $1500 (for that model) off the top and I'm doing the work.

My council would be look at his asking price and then start deducting issues like soft floor, wet or weak transom, engine corrosion, electrical, steering, depending how long he owned the boat, a true documented  maintenance history, not verbal, trailer corrosion, tire and bearing condition, overall gelcoat condition and package cleanliness. It has a relatively high tech engine, now out of warranty. If the engine is clean and maintained, thats at least 1/2 is asking price right there. If the hull and trailer are in nice shape $6000-$6500 would be reasonable.

Tank is original but hoses were replaced when new engine was installed in 2006

Since there isn't a trailer, no value there. The owner is original, however, he doesn't have any literature and maintenance records seem to be in his head. However, he did tell me where he has kept the boat and what yard supposedly maintained it so I may be able to get info from them. The gel coat is very clean, as is the boat, with only two soft spots I've detected in front of the fish boxes. I'm in process of reaching out to someone who seems very familiar with the boat and he's actually a surveyor. Was planning on hiring him to look over the boat before I found out he may know the boat.
I started with his asking price, and have deducted for the tank having to be replaced because it's original. Figured $1500 for that.

I believe the CCPs are known to have a "springy" spot in the floor in front of the "coffin".  The reason is that area of the floor has a large unsupported span.  Of course a soft spot in the floor caused by a bad core in the deck is another story.   Without a trailer I'd say that price is a tad strong.  At least in my market.  But of course this market is FLOODED with boats.  Yes it has a newer motor on it but it is still a 33 year old unrestored hull.  For his asking price you can find a boat that is a decade and a half newer.
