24' Side Console Aquasport rebuild

hey guys, my name is eric.  just joined the forum and looking forward to some tips from the pros.  just picked up my first aquasport, and plan to do a somewhat complete rebuild.  here is where I'm at so far. basically gutting everything except for the stringers.  they arent de-lamenated at all, and everything appears to be pretty solid.  therefore, unless, someone tells me otherwise, i think i am going to leave the stringers as they are.  the foam seems fine and there doesnt appear to be any water intrusion. the entire deck came out pretty easily. these are pics before i started any demo

after day one, we are currently sitting like this... everything is out for the most part, except for the fuel tank, and some odds and ends.  






does anyone have any experience with these models? hard to find info online, and seems most rebuilds are the 222.  im curious how essential the two masses of foam on both sides of the boat back towards the back end are. thinking about taking them out possibly? thanks

Gotta admit, a bit sad to see the unmistakeable SeaHunter wave guard and mini-cuddy go, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.   :(

Completely unessential.  The more exposed foam, the heavier the boat and the more likely to waterlog.  The stringers, however, DO need to be re-cored to preserve engineered rigidity if you ultimately remove the factory foam core.

Sorta scratching my head about that tank install and the wood behind the tank. See the transom was added to also.

Those are beautiful hulls....There are some great Seahunter pics here in our archives...one in particular with a teak sole that will knock your socks off.

Re the 22-2's....you'll be looking at the same rebuild parameters for your ride...all good!

thanks for the replies guys... sorry to tear out everything from a classic, but it will be one of a kind when i am done.. using her for a work boat, so i needed to maximize deck space to create the most efficient work platform possible.  another day of grinding, took out the old fuel tank, took out the two blocks of foam towards the transom, and started to dissect the transom issues.  there were a couple areas that didnt look so great.  looks like someone started the transom rebuild but did a half ass job to say the very least...







anyone had experience putting a bracket on this style of transom? as you can see there is a gap that im planning on screwing a new board to butt up against the existing elevated transom.  not really sure what else to do since the transom is flared in. thanks for any input!

A single bracket w/o the swim platforms will work just fine.  I'd go with a 24" set back...

unfortunately after some further examination, although the stringer sides themselves weren't de-lamenating at all, the bottom 6" of foam was completely soaked.  ended up taking all the foam out of both stringers, might just leave the front section alone since it is elevated a bit.  thinking ill probably just take the original stringer bases out and run new wood ones. ill try and take some more pics this weekend

All good. We've seen that most of the time on the early boats the top portion is dry....the bottom saturated. May as well take the foam out of the upper ones too while you're at it. Get rid of the weight.

Those stringers are in place, beefy and worth saving. IMHO would tab the insides, re-foam, and glass the tops. If it ain't broke...save the time and money. Take a look at Dirtwheel's current mullet boat project for solid direction

As for putting in wood, why bother. (Not trying to start a wood vs composite argument) The original trapezoid stringer system was and is still a great design. Simple as well with less work and most boat builders are using a variation of that today. With today's db1708 type fiberglass which is much stronger and lighter then when originally build. With you doing a work boat, it would be easy to repair should you ding your baby. You are on the east coast near anything boating  and US Composites. They have the best price, and you can order via phone then drive to them the next day and pick up. No shipping and they will sell out of the building now. They just don't advertise it. I picked up from there this past Tuesday.

It may cost you a bit more maybe, but a few of the bracket builders will work with you and create a custom bracket that should fit the unique shape. Its hard to tell from the pics as to how much room is there but figured I would share the information.

I am using all composite on mine. Coosa is awesome, sooo dense. It never absorbs water.
