New(er) engine for me on the 170
« on: February 08, 2014, 07:29:32 PM »
My father and I decided to combine boats.  So we took my 170 and put his 90 etec on the jackplate.  It should be an ideal power plant for this hull.  Light, torquey and and easy starting. My old 90 is going on my dads whaler to be sold off.  I will post a report on speed, hole shot and overall impressions.  The engine is a 2009 with only a couple hundred hours.  And so far has been trouble free.  I know I just jinxed myself

I have a 90 hp Ocean Pro on my 170 mounted on a Bob's machine manual jack plate. Makes a great power combination for that hull.  I love how the jack plate moves the engine aft just enough so the rigging and steering don't waste any aft deck space.

I have used a CMC jackpate on my boat since day one.  I wouldn't be without one.  Those ocean pros are some darn good engines.  It's probably a few years newer than my old 90.  That engine always ran great.....once it started.  Did OMC fix the hard starting with your engine?

My 90 is a 1997 60 degree looper with the optical ignition.  She's pretty easy to start.  But she is a carbed OMC so she's cold natured.  The motor was the selling point for me when I bought the boat since it looks like new.

I have taken my boat out a couple of times since the engine swap.  First impressions are good.  It's a quiet engine at all speeds.  Maybe not Yamaha four stroke quiet.  But I will take the torque and low weight.  Hole shot is great.  I haven't tried to pull any skiers yet.  But it seems to pull like a freight train for a small engine.  But the freight train runs out of steam a little early for me.  With the current prop, a 15" rxb4 pt tech, it runs up to 4800 rpm at 36 mph.  I have a similar prop with less pitch to test out.  There is no smoke to speak of and fuel consumption is very good.  Honestly, I think it's a great setup for these boats.

That engine according to BRP can spin up to 5500.  But the sweet spot is supposed to be 5200.  That is what I am going to shoot for.  Here is a useful chart to for Etec engine speeds: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/refere ... neRPM.html

That is not an easy to be quadruple IP banned!  I hate it when people get their feelings hurt over boats on the internet.

Either way, CW did provide a nice chart of recommended BRP RPMs.  Now I just need to stop working 60 hours a week and enjoy the new power plant more.

If I may explain myself about Jim Hebert and continuouswave (a bit of a de-rail)...

Hebert, although a very smart man, runs CW like his own little fiefdom (the reason Joe Kriz broke off and started Whaler Central).  Deleting GOOD posts, editing GOOD posts (that didn't need editing), in general pissing a lot of members off.  Many of us would communicate via email (no PMs there) as to how we were tired of his BS...so one day, in some thread, I basically called him out, told him to leave people's chit alone (there are valid reasons for editing/deleting posts, I understand that), and quit being such a goddam domineering site owner/administrator.  Well, obviously, that didn't go over too well, almost instantly banned AND IP banned, with no explanation, no 30 day time out...nothing.

Interesting enough, after my banning, I got a bunch of emails from CW members wishing they had said the same things I did.  BTW, I had been on CW since '06, so it's not like I was some upstart newbie...

Back to the subject at hand...

Derails welcome.  Sounds like that guys is a bit of a over bearing son of a gun.  Thank god we don't have that here.  This is the best site on the web.  Bar none.

My dad has not sold the whaler yet.  Its a 1987 17 foot.   Its got my old, but good running, 1992 evinrude 90, a bobs jack plate, hydraulic steering, and a leaning post.  Its a nice setup.  He just doesn't use it and its not as fishing friendly as my 170.  Let me know if you want pics.

On the derail: I'm not a member at CW, but I have always wondered what the deal was when I would google something, read responses on CW and see edits in various posts, all by who I'm assuming to be this fella you're talking about...3 initials...

Just in my brief and infrequent perusals of that website, I think I'd have felt inclined to say something similar.

I only posted that because I've honestly wondered out-loud what the deal was on that website, and I guess it appears to be nothing more than what I was forced to assume...one guy edits everything as he sees fit.

Back to subject at hand: I've always thought ETEC's were awesome motors (on paper) and might look at their 130 one day for my 19-6 if I can lose enough weight to think I could tolerate another 100lbs back there without sinking.
