Bilge pump and switch connector
« on: May 05, 2014, 08:59:54 PM »
Hey guys,
I am replacing my rear bilge pump and float switch on a 02 explorer. They are both wired to some kind of waterproof type connector. The pins and the female side in the connector have some corrosion on them, does anyone have any experience removing the pins from the connector. Is there possibly a tool for this?
Thanks for your help,
Bob

Can you post a picture of the connector?  I've been using Weatherpack connectors on my boats lately, and I have a tool to remove the pins, but I'm pretty sure they are different than the OEM connectors installed in these boats.

Pics are a must.  Could be a Deutsch connector, could be Amphenol...

Do you really need the connector?  I'd just cut the harness behind the connector and then wire in the new pump and float with heat shrink watertight butt connectors. That pump and switch are fun to get to huh?  :D

Thanks for your replies guys. Took wingtime's advice and eliminated the connector pump and switch connectors. I did the fish box hatch mod like Marc did. Much easier access but for a big guy like me it's still not easy!
Thanks again.

The connector is nice, at least for the pump, as it allows a quick change at see in a hurry.

However, that does not mean that min have a connector. But it's on the list.

I agree, especially on devices that you know will need replacement from time to time.  I use Johnson pumps (cartridge style).  When I put the last one in, I used a Weatherpack connector.  Now, when I need to replace it, it should take all of 2 minutes to swap it out.  If I get off my arse, I will get a replacement cartridge, put a connector on it, and keep it on board.  That way i can make an emergency pump swap without any tools.

Didn't think about changing a pump quickly. Here is a pic of the original plugs.

Those look like Weatherpack connectors.  The tool to remove the pins, as well as new pins, assemblies, etc., can be purchased on amazon for not a lot of money.
