Mercury Swivel pin replacement
« on: October 26, 2013, 10:24:13 PM »
Today I started pulling apart my 98 Mercury 200 offshore so I could replace the rotted out swivel pin with a used one from a freshwater motor.    The only bolts that gave me problems were the ones that hold the lower rubber motor mounts to the mid section, and the hardest part of the tear down was getting the old swivel pin out.  I ended up using a floor jack with steel pipe to press it out. When I went to install the new "used" pin I noticed the tiller handle is slightly different.  The original pin had the wider tiller handle and the new one is the older style thin (but much thicker) handle.  It fits in there perfectly and was used on the  220hp motors so strength shouldn't an issue.  Do you think this will be OK.  I don't want to shell out $600 bucks for a new stainless one if I don't have to.

Used pin on the left, Original on the right

Thanks,
Sean

Should be OK. Double check the swivel bushing locations to make sure they are the same and the diameter. Replace the bushings and grease it up.

Was the one you pulled off original?  Most I've seen look like the replacement...

I believe that was the original swivel pin, but I could be wrong.  I've only had the boat for 4 months now so I do not know its history. I was pleased to find out the transom is nice and solid and the powerhead looked like it was recently replaced. It took me 3 days to take it apart, repaint, and reinstall.  Its really not a difficult job to do if you have the time and access to an engine hoist.
