Light bulb replacement help
« on: June 30, 2013, 08:04:23 PM »
The 2 rear transom courtesy lights are useless and weak.  Has anyone changed out the those two lights with a much brighter direct replacement ?  Should I just replace the bulbs with something brighter or swap out the whole assembly with something different such as LED's............What are my direct replacement options ? Thanks in advance........Mike

I replaced mine recently with regular bulbs. I had thought of LEDs but never purchased any. If you night fish you might want to get more light but you would probably do better spending the money on a larger interior lights.

I replaced the bulbs in mine with LEDs.

I used these LEDS from Superbriteleds:  http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/miniature-wedge-base/194-led-bulb-1-x-1-watt-smd-led-wedge-base/205/

I used a different one for the livewell...  I think I used superbriteled model 921-x12

thanks for the links guys.........forgive my ignorance but my boat is in slip over 90 minutes from home, I forgot to pull one of the transom courtesy light bulbs last time out.........Is it the 194 that I need to order to replace the existing standard bulbs ? these LEDS will work with original lighting assembly ? Thanks again, Mike

Mike the 194 that I posted the link for will plug right into the existing light fixture.  Due to the design of the light fixture you want a led that projects the light forward.  Leds that face to the side of the fixture won't do you any good.

Have you tried to get to the light that sits just beyond the transom door?  I could not get to mine (arms abt 2 feet too short) to pull the bulb, more importantly push it back on the back of the lens.  I don't have any custom hatches that allow access to that area so it was a showstopper for replacing bulbs as I did not want to install another hatch.

I opted to replace mine with Red Hella LED flush mounts.  Very easy install with only three little holes for the screws and it covers/uses the existing holes with the lenses removed for the wires. If you are a quick splicer install is 10 min or less.  Just make sure you buy the Hella courtesy lights that have the spacer ring included.  Not all come with it and it's necessary to flush mount.  Good luck!

PS - I have used these to replace all the stock courtesy lights (two at the transom and two low on the helm)  Love em'

thanks so much for the links............I think I will need to replace both transom fixtures in order to use the LEDs.  I seem to have different light fixtures(original and stock) than everyone else here.  Finally got to pull the bulbs a few days ago and they are the old style with the round bottom contacts not the flat bottom types that everyone has shown me here.

Mine (1991) were the same way.
I removed the fixtures and used the hole (inserted a grommet) to run wires up to LED strip lighting I mounted under the gunnel. I prefer the indirect LED strip and the light cast on the deck. It is much more efficient than the OEM fixture and much, much easier on old eyes at night.

I bought my lights here. Reasonable and they seem well built. Still working too but there are cheaper sources.

Good luck. :thumleft:
