Water spitting out vent when refueling?

Filled up the 175 yesterday and when I started filling it, a bit of water spit out of the fuel vent at first. I wouldn't say it was a lot but it was enough that I noticed and stuck my finger under it to catch a bit to smell it and see if it was water of fuel.
Is this normal and just clearing of the loop? We had just gone tubing (for the first time) and the wind was kicking up the water a bit.
Probably wouldnt have thought much of it before but I just finished cleaning the tank last fall after I got stranded with water in my gas tank. I took it in to the shop that time and they told me I was leaking from the gasket around the gas gauge. However, I also actually had a busted fuel vent earlier last year and think I took on water that way because I was dumb and didnt fix it properly immediately.  I have a new vent with the screen facing down.  But now I am paranoid about any water intrusion. Is water spitting out the vent normalish or something to worry about?
I didn't see this after my fishing outing last week but that was a calm day and I wasn't tubing.

KC, I would bet condensation in the vent hose.  Water settles to the bottom when in the tank due to it being heavier than gas.

When you reinstalled the vent hose, did you allow enough length to create a loop in the line (like the one under your bath or kitchen sink) but in reverse? The top of the loop ends up higher than the vent entry itself so that water entering the vent is "trapped" and prevented (when small amounts enter) from traveling down into the tank.
From the conditions you describe, SB's idea seems correct unless a large quantity came out and you didn't indicate that.

Yep, I did notice the loop in the line when I was replacing the vent.  I did't mess with the existing loop... even if I wanted to, it looked like it would be a pain because that hatch is so small.
Not a ton of water but it was something I noticed... if I have to guess I'd say maybe an ounce of water.
Hopefully not a sign of too much water spraying up.
I'm not a fan of the simple vent... there must be a vent that is covered so that I don't even need to worry about this?  or maybe I should just quit worrying anyway.
Or maybe I should also start carrying a small portable tank with me just in case.
If paranoid because I got stranded last year in the middle of cape cod bay with a tank full of water... towboat eventually came but they have to come through the canal first so it took awhile.  This stuff happens so it doesn't really bother me but I want to try to be proactive when possible!

I recommend installing a clam shell over the vent, this will prevent water from entering the vent when under way.

vent cover sounds great but I can't seem to find any... any recommendation or link for specific product I could buy?  Sounds like it could be cheap and easy
edit - sorry, now I understand... simple clamshell... I guess i would have the opening of the shell facing back toward the stern?  I wonder if they make clamshells in many varieties so that I can find one that fits over the protruding fuel vent effectively.  Probably no shortcut besides going for a visit to WM to have a look...

That vent looks great, Bob.  I wish I had seen that before I bought one for my rebuild (I know, I'm not going to need to install it for looong time, but I have been picking up some odds and ends along the way).

The vent I bought has a 90 degree bend.  I guess I can mount it with the bend facing up and just put a 180 degree bend in the hose.  As long as the hose doesn't kink, I would think it would have the same effect.

Beautiful, thanks - nice that this one is 2" high so plenty of room for that protruding vent.

Installed the seadog clam shell.   Makes me feel much better.  I'm wasn't thrilled with the look of it but peace of mind is great knowing that water is unlikely to enter via the vent now
