Old gas?
« on: June 07, 2013, 11:28:01 AM »
Well, went fishing the other day. Outboard did not run really well.
Gas is from last Fall. Yes, there is Sta-Bil in the fuel and, here in CA we only get the crappy 10% ethanol fuel.
I think I am going to go the the marine fuel dock and flush it out.
It is running and runs ok, just not great.

Before I go flush it and change the fuel filter, any tricks or suggestions?
I figured I will go get a 6 gal portable tank and run to the fuel dock on new fresh fuel.
Let them pump it out and then flush out the tank, add in the new fuel and additives.
Should be good to go till Oct?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Bryan

Bryan before you do  that syphon some fuel into a clear bottle let it settle and see if you have water or seperation if not just fill tank with fresh fuel and you should be good to go. I use nothing but 10% ethanol and treat whats left in the tank usually 80 or 90 gallons in november in april I start my engines and go with no problems. I triple dose the fuel in november.

Ethanol will typically go bad in 30 days without a stabilizer in it... and not much longer with it.  As mentioned draw some out fuel into a jar and let it settle to see what you have to work with.  You may be better off just draining it and starting fresh.

The fuel looks ok, no real issues.
Has a little "off" smell to it.
Nothing too bad and it is starting and idling, just a little popping at idle
The fuel water separator looks really clean.
I think maybe just flush it out and add in a new filter?

Thanks, I appreciate the advice.
By triple dose, can I assume you mean 3 times the Sta-Bil?
I always use additives when filling.
I am thinking I have some residual fuel from last Summer?
I didnt fish here much last year.
Maybe better to flush out and start fresh.
