Impeller or Water Pump Kit?
« on: June 04, 2013, 09:54:23 AM »
I don't know how long it has been since the impeller was replaced, so I am ordering one today.  My question is:

Should I order the water pump kit and do the entire thing?  Or just the impeller?    I never installed a water pump kit, but can't think it is very difficult.

Recommendations?

I have always been told to replace the entire kit but I am sure others will come along and weigh in.  Install is not that complicated but accuracy counts.

Hi Joey,
One thing I usually do if I'm not familiar with an engines history. Tear it down and then order parts as opposed to ordering parts and then tear down. This way, you can order exactly what you need, saving time and money.

It all makes sense.  Since the lower unit will be off... just replace/fix what-ever needs to be done.

Joey,
The water pump assy (the whole shootin' match including the impeller) is kinda like automobile brake calipers.  You can buy the caliper re-build kit for $25, or you can buy the whole frickin re-manned caliper, which includes all the parts in the re-build kit, for $28!

Basically a no-brainer...

Joey,
I just did my lower unit. I have a 1985 Johnson 140. I got the whole replacement kit for the water pump.
It was around $60.00. the whole pump assembly on my engine is new. the only trouble I had, was getting the shift shaft through
the hole without it turning. after two attempts I removed the clam shell, and everything went back together A- ok.
I also replaced the lower unit oil. something you might want to do while it's apart.

goodluck, tight lines and gin clear water.  :salut:
