Repower my 250CCP

Hi guys, seems like the 200hp 2-stroke Suzuki on my 250ccp has had a bit of a meltdown.  By all appearances the #5 cylinder has had an "episode".  I was originally going to find a new power head and fix it, but I'm not sure I want to repair a 15 year old 2-stroke vs. replacing with a used, and slightly higher HP, 4-stroke.  I've lost confidence in the motor and when fishing 40 miles out, that is not a feeling I want to have every time I go fishing.  No surprise that I've reached out to SeaBob4 for his feedback, but thought I would open it up to the masses to see if I should a) repair or b) replace.  If the latter, what brands/models should I steer clear of?  If I replace, I will be looking for a mid 2000's or later 225 or 250hp four-stroke as replacement.

I'm not sure about the 250 CCP or the model year you have, but if it is like other Aquas of that era I'd keep an eye on the amount of weight you put back there.  So you may want to keep that in mind in your search for a repower.  Don't rule out a Etech or an Optimax as an option either unless you prefer a four stroke.

Bruce is correct in not ruling out newer 2-strokes.  But I'll throw my $.02 in here and suggest a Yam OX66.  250HP preferably as she is a pretty big boat.  OX66s properly cared for will run just about forever... :thumleft:

Thanks guys.  Always appreciate the insight and suggestions.  I was thinking 4-stroke for fuel economy but also know they weigh a bit more.  Does anyone know if the newer 2-strokes (ie.  2005 or newer) are better on fuel than say my '98 Suzuki 2-stroker?

The direct injected 2-stroke motors are more fuel efficient than 4-stroke motors. In regards to fuel efficiency the Mercury Optimax is the top dog.

I have a 250 Osprey and went with a 2012 200 HO E-Tec and love it.  I know people are very passionate about their motors and many swear by a certain brand... I couldnt be happier.  It has no problem whatsoever pushing the 25'er and gets up on plane in a heartbeat.

Just curious.. What do you run WO with the 200 HO?  My vessel is very similar and I have 225 Johnson (41mph @ WO) and would have thought a traditional 200 might be a little light on the HP.  I admit, I have no idea the difference b/t a regular 200 and the HO version...  Very interested in your decision making process to go with a 200 HO vs. a 250 or 300 as I am flirting with a re-power in a couple years. Hope you can help with some real world insight.  Thanks in advance.

Have you considered twins? We run twin evinrude ficht 150's on our 89' CCP. Took us a while to get them dialed in after we bought the boat in Dec. 11' but we have been pleased with the performance. Tops out at 47mph WOT. Cruises comfortably at 38 - 40 mph at 3800 - 4000 RPM. I only suggest twins because you mentioned fishing 40 miles out. At least if one goes out you can limp home on the other.

Hey Bruce,
WOT on mine will run anywhere from 38-45 depending on wind, chop and load.  I had the motor raised slightly so the cav plate is just above the water line at the end of the season and only got to play with it a few times but it was running a tad quicker and rpm's were a bit higher as well.  If I am not mistaken, and I very well might be, I think the 200 HO version runs similar to the regular 250 with more pull or low end torque... I am fairly new at this and don't claim to be an expert so I may be off on that.  I will say as heavy as I feel my 250 Osprey is, that motor gets me up on plane quick and never struggles.  The hole shot is impressive. Its effortless.  I was steered towards the HO rather than a larger hp version based on the boat, size and what I use it for.  I put a lot of faith in the Marina that did the install and felt very comfortable after doing my research on it.  Not a single regret... No maintenance for 3 years, starts first crank each time, every time, quiet, no smoke at all.  I have about 100 hours on it so far, and look forward to putting another 100+ on this season.

Repowered my 250 CCP with a 2006 250 ETEC. Would recommend ETEC's for repowering the 250CCP since its a hull is light and the xtra weight on the end might give handling issues. That said, when I did the repower, I hung it on a wide Armstrong bracket and enclosed the transom. The end result was fantastic and the ETEC's get better mileage than any other two stroke. Lots of slow trolling for sails with a burn of .18 gph. I run the boat 30mi offshore as well and its bulletproof. I tried submitting pics but it says the image is too big.

My 250xf has twin 115 opti's and runs fine. Roughly 40 wot.
