my 1987 19'6 transom and refit thread
« on: September 11, 2013, 09:55:20 AM »
well, now that i have pics ill start the thread.  no im not doing the work myself.  me and my dad would have finished this weeks ago but i really have no desire to grind fiberglass right now and im just too busy.  i got a hell of a price from a local guy.  he came highly recommended and ive seen other work from him.  he is good.  a little slow, but good.  so im just going to let him do his thing.

i completely stripped the boat before he picked it up.  everything.  except the console and ttop.  i was limited to one hand as i was still recovering from a second surgery on a broken hand.  its much better now and half usable though.  its just going to stay in place and be worked around.

i have some other projects in the meantime to keep my busy, like the motor as seen in my other threads.  btw, is this a 19'6 model or 200 model?  ive gotten confused lately with some stuff ive read.

here is whats happening:
new transom raised to 25".  same shape as original.  i want it to look like it came from the factory that way.
piece of floor replaced.
filling a few holes in the console and else where that i dont need.
awlgrip stars and stripes blue on the hull down to the chine.
bottom is going to stay black just because i ran out of money.  if i could it would be white.  its not bottom paint btw, just black paint.
awlgrip snow white on the cap, deck, console
new non skid following original layout as far as smooth surfaces for faster drainage.
i told him to surpize me on the non skid color.  smooth pieces will be the snow white.  told him i want something that honestly looks good, matches and wont be too hot.  im horrible at those desicions and he has painted many boats and would know better than me.  if i hate it ill jsut have him roll back over it with the white.

we checked the stringers and flotation foam a little further forward and when the transom wood was removed.  pretty dry actually.  i was happy about that.  the grey thats on there now is just to give me a base idea for color.  itll not get 2 coats of the stars and stripes on top of that.

here are the pics!!  youll see some voids next to the stringers that look like they werent sealed from the factory.  i bet thats how the transom got wet.  all that will be epoxied and shut.

Nice work Jason

You have the taller gunnel cap, therefore it is a 200 Osprey.

Your LOA is indeed 19'-6" but was labeled in 1987 as a 200. There was no "19-6 " model.

hull color is on  3 coats.  rolled and tipped.  impressive results i think.  he did a great job.  nice and shiny.  first coat of white on the cap.  still need to do inside, floor, non skid.  transom should be done this week hopefully.

looks great.Diod you paint yourself or have  someone do it? I am thinking of having my Osprey 200 painted ... just the sides only in a different color. Any ideas of what that will cost?

im paying someone to do the work.  im capable but just dont have time and really hate sanding.  he is charging me very little for the sides.  it was a last minute extra i asked him to do and he barely charged me for it.  the sides are really pretty easy to do.  should be able to get it done under $1k.  he must get great prices for the awlgrip supplies cause he charged me less than half of that for the sides.  i did verify myself that its awlgrip.  awesome stuff.   dries hard as a rock.  the previous paint was trash.  a pencil eraser couldve probably stripped it off.

floor/cap done.  just need to do the transom now.  stringers dried out perfectly from what i complained about before.  everything got epoxied shut after it dried.  flotation foam is dry.  no cracks/serperation or anything else inside.  hope there arent any lines in the paint.  woulda thought he'd do teh transom before painting.  but ill let him do his thing.  progress picked up a little after my wife called him a couple weeks ago.  who knows what went down there.  ill check it out again wed or so and see whats done.  these picks were taken friday evening.  all the white is snow white and the grey is whisper grey.

i have to say, his work is fantastic for the price.  i love how its turning out.  every crack, scratch, pock hole, or any other damage on the floor and cap was filled, reshaped very well.  even though its been over 2 months for pretty much just a paint just so far i wont bitch.  dont want a crappy rush job done.  he has done some little extras for me to help me out like replacing the rub rail insert with a new piece he had laying around, painting the engine cowl and pan, filled several holes in the console that i didnt want and several screw holes throughout the boat.  i might go and start putting cleats, lights, dash etc back in the evenings.  its in a public boat yard and i can get it anytime i want.

Slow is good sometimes!        Wonder why he didnt do transom?   Im sure he can hide the tape lines in the corners easily enough....

ya im just letting him do his thing at this point.  i wondered the same about the transom.  we'll see how it turns out.  so far i am very happy with the quality of work.  the transom is the most important part of this whole thing so we'll see.

for now im just working on getting the motor back together. should have an almost complete outboard by sunday night.
