tire size
« on: November 10, 2012, 07:36:37 AM »
Hi All,   I have a 17.5 Aquasport and after 12 years I'm finally going to replace the tires. I usually only put 50 miles a year on the tires...
I have 185-80R13  on them now.  5 hole hub.
I see the 13 inch 5 hole tires available from West Marine at $139 each, but are
175-80R   NOT 185      Can I use the 175's?   and what about the hub hole size?
are they standard?
Any idea about an internet company that has them less $$$?
  Thanks..Ken

You can run 175, but why not just go with a 185?  How about $70 including shipping:

I just buy Wal-Mart tire and rim combos.  Mine always dry rot way before I wear them out.  If I made lots of long trips I would probably change that but it works for my purposes.

Thanks guys....I've been doing some exploring and found one on the net.
175-80D  with 5 hole rim.    84.34 each, $168.68 for the pair. free shipping.
white painted rim, so I'm going to call them and see about a galv. rim.  I live on Cape Cod and  use it in salt water.

PB blaster, a six point socket with a breaker bar and extension and a good propane torch.  Just went through this and getting the lugnuts really warm then quenching with PB a number of times then a straight shot of heat did the trick.  Once the torque was broken, lots of oil, and working the nut off/on (like you would a die if you were cutting threads) with an impact wrench, cleaned the threads up. 16 frozen lug nuts and each was a fight, none stripped..  The gods were smiling that day!

You should have gone out and bought a lottery ticket that day.

the Gods were smiling on me too.   I got a four point wrench, a couple of blocks of oak and put one end on the lug, the opposite on a block of oak, and then my 250 pounds on the wrench.  One small jump and the lug came free.  did that ten times, and all came loose....more PB spray, and I'll let them sit then take them off, but they're not locked in anymore..

I just replaced one of mine that went flat (dry rot) 185-80R13 Went to a tire store and got a regular trailer tire for 75 mounted. Better off with a 185-80R13 trailer tire than a 185-80R13 car tire.
My short-term memory is not as sharp as it used to be.

I have found it is cheaper to buy trailer tires already mounted on galv. rims then buying tires and having them mounted on the old rims.
