Fishfinder,Radio & Compass

Put a new Fishfinder , Compass & Radio on today. Put a Garmin 300C fishfinder a Ritchie Compass and a Uniden UM380 Marine radio on the boat today. GPS is nice but everyone should be able to read and follow a compass. Left a spot on the dash for my coffee cup.

A boat is not seaworthy without a cupholder.  That's what my Dad says...

Andy, just out of curiosity, key the mike on the VHF while observing the compass card.  It's AWFUL close to that VHF, and in transmit mode, VHFs typically pull around 5.5-6A, so you may see some unwanted movement...

What I was thinking - also I hope the radio speaker is magnetically shielded...

I was wondering the same thing but I figured I'd wait and see if anyone else  chimed in on it.  I know I've noticed my compass swing by just having a screw driver on the dash.

I tried it when I put it in and it didn't seem to affect the compass but I'll be checking it out again in the Spring when I get the boat back in the water.

I will say this Andy.  If your power ever craps out, and there is no GPS, no compass rose screen on the Garmin, the VHF is dead, it won't matter...the compass will work!
