My new motor is in! It won't be long now.
« on: April 11, 2006, 11:39:22 AM »
I called the dealer and was so happy to hear him tell me that the boat with my motor on it is in.  I'm getting a good/great deal on an 06 Mercury Optimax to repower my 87 Osprey 222, replacing the 87 Mercury 150 BlackMax and the new motor is on an 2006 Angler 204 which the dealer will be taking off and putting on my boat.  I'll be dragging the 222 in there this Friday and hopefully splashdown will be the 22nd or 23rd of April.  I am so psyched!

I dropped the boat off on Friday, what supposedly was supposed to take two days has now turned into two weeks, busy season for the dealer has begun I guess, back in March it was ok however the two weeks it took for the motor to get to MA means we'll have to now wait two weeks which will put us at the end of April, no problem though, if we have to wait we have to wait, so long as it gets done right then all will be well in the world.

One week down, one week to go.  The dealer even sent me a letter saying that they appreciate my business and that they are comitted to my satisfaction which is very encouraging meaning they are working on the repower.  It is getting nice weather-wise here in New England and I can't wait to get the boat back, dump it in the water, turn the key for the first time and hear the Optimax run, it will be music to my ears, run it for a little while, breaking it in according to the good book, then getting it back home to complete the switch panel install and the console frame/radio tray install as well as the new CD player and wired remote, one more week, one more week, like a kid before Christmas, I'm giddy.

I have had my boat in the shop since Feb. 25,2006. Some how water got into the valves, rusted one and broke another.  I had purchased an extened warrenty for the motor but guess what.  The valves are not covered.  :(  The company said that I should have purchase the premium plane not the standard.  :x  So I just got off the phone with dealer ship and a new motor is on order.  I can't wait to get my boat back and on the water! :D

The aggravation is beginning to settle in.  When first going in to make the deal, the salesman tells us that a motor should be in in about a week, it takes two, and he also says that once it is in it will only take a day or two to get the old motor off and hang the new one, it has been another two weeks for a total of one whole month!  I call today and they tell us that they are evaluating the 87 motor for the trade, $6-700 which I could care less about, the motor is an anchor as far as I'm concerned but they are still dragging.  I have another dealership that has the motor in stock and can hang it as soon as I get it to him, so if nothing happens tommorow I'm going to get the boat back and end the fiasco, I was afraid something like this was going to happen, what a bummer!

What a mistake thinking that getting a repower would be so easy.  I called the dealer this morning, they tell me that the motor I would be trading would be worth $200 instead of the $6-700 they thought it would be worth, they spoke to me like the motor should have been in mint condition, "Why the F are we getting a new motor anyway?" then the salesman proceeds to spin some tale about how guages will be extra and I'm not falling for the blowing smoke up my corn-chute routine and kindly ask for the  $2K deposit and we'll be on our way, to make a long one short, they get me for $250 an "evaluation" of our motor, for someone to put some muffs on, put a battery in and turn the key, I will keep the dealer unnamed as it is the classy thing to do, still I'm not happy.

I get the boat up to another dealer who has the engine I want in stock, the owner of the place takes his time to check out the boat, transom and go over every detail of what we'll be needing along with a price for everything and is happy to give us $500 for the old motor, and he will have it hung by WEDNESDAY!, oh happy day.  I wish I had gone to this dealer first however it cost me $250 to find him, an expensive lesson for sure but I left with a warm, fuzzy feeling as his price was even better than the first place that I went.

We considered for a moment to keep the battery in the transom/splashwell however we nixed the idea as I don't like the idea of all the seawater getting all over the battery in that well, plus, the battery did a great job under the console as the nice thick guage of wire/battery wire going to the rear worked very well.  I do hear that the Optimax's need a 1000CCA battery for the power it needs to spin the motor along with all the computer stuff, but I think the short run won't harm it all that much so that is that.

I had been lied to and jerked around by the first dealer but now things are back on track so by this Wednesday and possibly after work on Thursday i can pick the old girl up and finish what I have to do to get her in business.  And the saga continues.

I called the dealer today to check on the status of the motor.  They stated that the motor came in this week but was not in the boat yet.  So I asked when the boat would be ready and I was told by the beginning of next week  :D .  Next weekend is Mothers day and my Anniversary, how nice it would be to have the boat back for that weekend.  I called the wife to inform her and she was thrilled to hear the good knews.

Ben87 what is the status on your motor for your boat?  I hope all is well and that you will be back on the water soon!

The new motor is on the transom and everything is wired up, they are putting a new steering system on as they said the helm sprung a leak, I suspect the mech. bodged it up, so they should be calling me to tell me that  it is ready today and I'll probably pick it up tommorow morning.

Good luck with yours, the season is upon us.
