1969 222 flat back power
« on: October 22, 2012, 08:39:11 PM »
Im finishing up a rebuild and would like to get input on power. i have full transom with port bracket ,tower, 30 gal live well 60 gal tank.
Will a Suzuki 150 4 stroke have enough power to plane off good? And still be fuel efficient?

Me thinks a 200 is in the cards.  You know, better to have and not need... :thumright:

Yes it will.

The 2012 Suzuki  four strokes consistently test out at 10-12% higher HP at the prop than factory stated, per discussion with a Suzuki dealer today.

For HP confirmation...check Gwhitley's performance #'s on his new rebuild, here on the Rebuild thread.

I've got the DF175 on mine and I think it is perfect. The 222, whether flattiies or 12 degree, are quite sensitive to weight and balance issues. The 150 is the same block as the 175, should be plenty. There are several rebuild threads where 150's were used and I don't recall any negative results.

Good luck!

I have a 73 222 (semi-v) which is supposed to need a little more power to push it than your flatback and I have a df175 on it. It will run 41-42 @5800 fully loaded with full folding tower . I did spend some time finding the right prop with ken @ propgods to get it to run this good, but I would imagine your flatback woul be pretty comparable with 25 less hp.

Go big or go home, nobody likes an underpowered boat.

I run a 2011 175pro xs merc on my flattie and its plenty of power, top end these flatback hulls get out of control, so pretty much anything over 40mph is unusable most of the time. Ive seen these hulls ran with a 115 4 stroke and they do fine even though thats not enough power for me.
When I repower next year I will might even go with a 150 pro xs.
If you are looking for a speed boat its not a flatback even with a 200

Excellent point. When these hulls are overpowered, they "chine walk" at high speed. That is, they torque over to the port side, and begin to plane off the port side "side.'

Not pretty.

You will be fine with a 150 Suzuki on your flatback. Remember, the flat aft section of these boats do not require much horsepower to plane out at all. Even the 140 is a great option for a flatback. Suzuki currently has the "Gimme 6" years of warranty coverage promotion through the end of the year. Although Suzuki has not always been particularly customer friendly in honoring warranty claims historically, it is still nice to have the extended warranty. We can get new Suzuki motors for 2.0% under dealer list if you are interested in a new engine. Rigging components are at dealer list cost. This is a pretty substantial savings over retail if you are interested.

It seems like Suzuki motors are spawning at Shipoke this week. They are everywhere in the rigging building.

Y'all need to remember when these hulls were made, the Merc tower 'o power 115 was top dawg, and a good number of flatbacks were delivered with twin 55s.  And also remember that was when HP was measured at the powerhead, not at the propshaft...

A 200 on a flattie is probably overkill - I may be craaaazzzyyy, but I'm thinking a Zuki 140 or one of the new Opti 125 motors might be the ticket...
