Idaho fishing trip
« on: October 21, 2012, 01:00:17 PM »
I had a great week off fishing for Steelhead in Idaho with Buds Terry and Dave. River was running really low this year and the Steelhead were not there yet in big numbers.River had a really large run of Fall Chinook.....non retention.... which made for a lot of action.
Big T and Dave managed to catch and kill a few hatchery Steelys, and release some really nice native ones....non retention on the nates.
All I could manage was to lose a few Steeys, and land a bunch of Salmon and trout.
View of Clearwater River from Daves deck

Lots of skinny water to run through with the jet

Daves hooked up with a nice nate Steely, he be wondering about now if he has enough line on his reel....with 8# mainline and 6# leaders you can't put a lot of pressure on em

We quessed the weight of this nate Steely around 16#

Some times they be easier to release than other times

Ts hooked up

A couple of hatchery fish we killed

A few picture of the river

Daves place on left

We fished mostly in the faster runs

And finally T's  6# woofel rock, landed after a 3 minute battle, not bad on 6# test

I know this is probably not the type of fishing most of you are familiar with but...
Fishing is fishing no matter where you are.  :D

Bill,
Beautiful pics!!  We may have 2 coasts, but between the 2 it's flat, and even though you guys call the "bumps" behind you hills, well, they are a sight for our eye's!!  And, yes, fishing is fishing, even though you guys point the square end first sometimes... :thumright:  :thumright:  :thumright:

Where were you in Idaho?  Looks to be over by Great Falls, but it's hard to tell...

Just SE of Lewiston
Dave's place is about 25 miles up the Clearwater River from where it runs into the Snake River.
His house is on the E side of the river. Not many houses on his side.
The road on his side is a one lane gravel road, no shoulder to speak of or guard rails on the drop off side, at some places on the road you are 200 ft above the river with nothing but air between you and the river below.

Very nice Bill.  I got to do a little fishing when I was stationed in Montana but nothing like that.

Well in my case, you're right up my alley. I take a lot of heat for fishing with #6 and #8 but over the years I've caught some pretty nice fish on that sewing line.
Great pics and really impressive fish for sure, on light tackle. :thumright:
